Ashok Kumar prevails in playoff over Ajeetesh Sandhu, lifts 13th PGTI title
Ajeetesh’s runner-up finish gives him the Rolex Ranking lead
Mewat, Haryana, October 7, 2016: Ashok Kumar of the DLF Golf & Country Club, Gurgaon, prevailed in a playoff over Chandigarh’s Ajeetesh Sandhu to lift his 13thPGTI title at the PGTI Masters 2016 being played at the Classic Golf & Country Club in Mewat, Haryana.
Ashok Kumar (68-67-70-66) and Ajeetesh Sandhu (65-71-68-67) were in a deadlock after the regulation 72 holes as both totaled 17-under-271. After both made pars on the first playoff hole, the second extra hole turned out to be decisive as Ashok converted a six-footer for birdie to clinch the title even as Ajeetesh made par.
Ashok Kumar, who last won on the PGTI nearly a year back in Mumbai, a victory also achieved on the second playoff hole, came out firing on all cylinders on Friday as he produced the day’s best of six-under-66.
Ashok, placed third, one off the lead, after round three, got his act together with four birdies on the front-nine in round four to pose a serious threat to overnight joint leader Ajeetesh Sandhu.
After making two long birdie putts on the eighth and ninth, the 33-year-old Ashok conceded a bogey on the 12th against the run of play. However, the 2010 Rolex Ranking champion came roaring back with birdies on the 14th, 17th and 18th to take the match into a playoff.
Ajeetesh had drained five birdies till the 16th and the match seemed to be going his way but Ashok turned it around with a 20-feet conversion on 17 and a magnificent chip on 18 which he almost holed.
Ashok then took advantage of being the longer hitter in the playoff against Ajeetesh on the par-5 18th to claim his first title of the season.
Ashok said, “I knew I had the advantage going into the playoff on the 18th as it is a long hole and my iron-play has been terrific this week. I made some long putts today and I feel the turning point was the birdie-birdie finish on 17 and 18 in regulation play that got me into the playoff. The 20-feet conversion on 17 was crucial.
“I’ve practiced a lot in recent months, much more than ever before, and that has produced the results for me. I’ve posted top-10s in my last three events. My career has seen several ups and downs but I’ve not let that play too much on my mind and instead stayed the course.
“I’m now keen to go for the Asian Tour Qualifying School early next year in order to get my Asian Tour card. I’m working towards that goal and mental focus will be the key if I have to get my card in Asia,” said Ashok, who has now moved up from 48th to 10thposition in the Rolex Ranking.
Runner-up Ajeetesh, who rounded off his week with an error-free 67, has now moved up from fourth spot to number one in the Rolex Ranking with season’s earnings of Rs. 18,37,268. Panchkula’s Shubhankar Sharma is second in the money list with earnings of Rs. 16,42,680.
Noida’s Vikrant Chopra claimed a distant third at 14-under-274 after a final round of four-under-68.
Chandigarh’s Sujjan Singh, Delhi’s Shamim Khan and C Muniyappa of Bengaluru, the overnight joint leader, shared fourth place at 11-under-277.

The 2016 Nobel Peace Prize awarded to Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos
The 2016 Nobel Peace Prize awarded to
Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos
”for his resolute efforts to bring the country’s more than 50-year-long civil war to an end”
PRESS RELEASE from the Norwegian Nobel Committee (in English and Norwegian):goo.gl/OD3znv
The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided to award the Nobel Peace Prize for 2016 to Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos for his resolute efforts to bring the country’s more than 50-year-long civil war to an end, a war that has cost the lives of at least 220 000 Colombians and displaced close to six million people. The award should also be seen as a tribute to the Colombian people who, despite great hardships and abuses, have not given up hope of a just peace, and to all the parties who have contributed to the peace process. This tribute is paid, not least, to the representatives of the countless victims of the civil war.
President Santos initiated the negotiations that culminated in the peace accord between the Colombian government and the FARC guerrillas, and he has consistently sought to move the peace process forward. Well knowing that the accord was controversial, he was instrumental in ensuring that Colombian voters were able to voice their opinion concerning the peace accord in a referendum. The outcome of the vote was not what President Santos wanted: a narrow majority of the over 13 million Colombians who cast their ballots said no to the accord. This result has created great uncertainty as to the future of Colombia. There is a real danger that the peace process will come to a halt and that civil war will flare up again. This makes it even more important that the parties, headed by President Santos and FARC guerrilla leader Rodrigo Londoño, continue to respect the ceasefire.
The fact that a majority of the voters said no to the peace accord does not necessarily mean that the peace process is dead. The referendum was not a vote for or against peace. What the “No” side rejected was not the desire for peace, but a specific peace agreement. The Norwegian Nobel Committee emphasizes the importance of the fact that President Santos is now inviting all parties to participate in a broad-based national dialogue aimed at advancing the peace process. Even those who opposed the peace accord have welcomed such a dialogue. The Nobel Committee hopes that all parties will take their share of responsibility and participate constructively in the upcoming peace talks.
Striking a balance between the need for national reconciliation and ensuring justice for the victims will be a particularly difficult challenge. There are no simple answers to how this should be accomplished. An important feature of the Colombian peace process so far has been the participation of representatives of civil war victims. Witnessing the courage and will of the victims’ representatives to testify about atrocities, and to confront the perpetrators from every side of the conflict, has made a profound impression.
By awarding this year’s Peace Prize to President Juan Manuel Santos, the Norwegian Nobel Committee wishes to encourage all those who are striving to achieve peace, reconciliation and justice in Colombia. The president himself has made it clear that he will continue to work for peace right up until his very last day in office. The Committee hopes that the Peace Prize will give him strength to succeed in this demanding task. Furthermore, it is the Committee’s hope that in the years to come the Colombian people will reap the fruits of the ongoing peace and reconciliation process. Only then will the country be able to address effectively major challenges such as poverty, social injustice and drug-related crime.
The civil war in Colombia is one of the longest civil wars in modern times and the sole remaining armed conflict in the Americas. It is the Norwegian Nobel Committee’s firm belief that President Santos, despite the “No” majority vote in the referendum, has brought the bloody conflict significantly closer to a peaceful solution, and that much of the groundwork has been laid for both the verifiable disarmament of the FARC guerrillas and a historic process of national fraternity and reconciliation. His endeavors to promote peace thus fulfil the criteria and spirit of Alfred Nobel’s will.

Chhattisgarh girls bt Kerala 57-48
The winners of the last two sub-junior national championships, Kerala girls and defending champions Chhattisgarh squared off in the final today morning. The game lived up to its billing with both teams sticking close to each other till the final minutes. Chhattisgarh followed their game plan of ball movement and finding the open man against Kerala’s zone defence. Kerala’s go-to player, centre Ann Mary Zachariah, struggled in the early going being unable to knock down freethrows. She was frequently double-teamed which opened up the lane for her teammate, Aleena Antony, who kept making tough layups to keep her side within a couple of possessions of Chhattisgarh.
Chhattisgarh, however, went on an 8-3 run to close the first half and held a 37 to 31 lead entering the third quarter. Kerala’s Ann Mary found her touch in the third quarter, creating second chance opportunities for her team. But Chhattisgarh still held the advantage entering the fourth period leading by 3 points.
In the final quarter, Chhattisgarh were the more accurate team from the field and found easy scoring opportunities in transition. Kirti (20 points) and Urvashi Baghel (16 points) led the way for their team as Chhattisgarh pulled away from Kerala in the final minutes. Coach Rajesh Patel guided his team admirably in this game resulting in a 57-48 win and a repeat championship run.
“This is my 100th medal at the national level,” an ecstatic Chhattisgarh Head Coach Rajesh Patel said post the win.
BFI-MP* bt Rajasthan 69-66
Defending champions BFI-Madhya Pradesh* boys were gunning for a three-peat as they entered their final against Rajasthan. Both teams were unbeaten so far in the tournament. The game began slowly with the teams feeling each other out in the first quarter. Rajasthan managed to put up only 6 points in the first period, but went on a scoring run in the second taking full advantage and poured in 37 points in the second quarter. Rajasthan regained the lead with the halftime score at 43 to 31.
In the second half BFI-Madhya Pradesh* showcased their quality offense, led by big man Virat Dhakad (19 points). Both teams followed a run-and-gun style of play, but BFI-MP* had more accuracy from the field in the second period and pulled their way back into the contest.
Leading by one point entering the fourth period, BFI-MP* kept their poise and held off a furious Rajasthan comeback attempt. Rajasthan’s most consistent player in the tournament, Mahaveer Banjara, led the way for his team once again with 29 points. But it wasn’t enough, as BFI-MP* pulled off a 3-point victory and were crowned 3-time champions.
