Nripendra Misra, former TRAI Chairman, appointed Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister with effect from on Wednesday.

Nripendra Mishra has had a distinguished career as bureaucrat. He has a reputation of top call efficiency and honesty.
Mishra held several top positions in UP and Centre including Principal Secretary to Chief Minister , UNION telecom Secretary and Chairman of Telecom Regulatory Authority, TRAI.
Mishra was Principal Secretary to UP Chief Minister Kalyan Singh .
In his stint at the centre , Mishra was Chairperson of TRAI between 2006 and 2009. This was the time when controversial 2 G licenses were given by the then telecom Minister A Raja.
A move which became cause of major embarassment to the UPA government of Dr Manmohan Singh.
It was Nripendra Mishra, who as TRAI chief raised several important points that could have made the process of spectrum allocation more transparent. But his recommendations were not adhered to during the allocation.
As Principal Secretary to PM Mishra, is expected to wield tremendous influence in fast tracking projects close the heart of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Egypt extends presidential election due to low turnout

Egypt’s presidential election has been extended by a day in an effort to boost a lower than expected turnout, Reuters reported. The two-day vote was originally set to conclude on Tuesday at 10pm (1900 GMT), but was extended until Wednesday to allow the “greatest number possible” to vote. The frontrunner, former army chief Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, had called for record voter participation, and the low turnout would appear to be a setback for the field marshal who toppled former President Mohamed Morsi.

Mauritius to provide automatic tax info exchange for India

Seeking to allay apprehensions about Mauritius being used for money laundering activities, its Indian-origin Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam on Tuesday said the island nation has decided to provide automatic exchange of tax related information with India.
Ramgoolam, who was in New Delhi to attend BJP leader Narendra Modi’s swearing-in as Prime Minister on Monday, also said that Mauritius would not allow anybody to abuse or misuse its jurisdiction for any illicit activities.Speaking to reporters after a bilateral meeting with Modi on Tuesday morning, Ramgoolam said he has also invited the Indian Prime Minister to visit Mauritius.
On the contentious issue of revision of a tax treaty between two countries, the Mauritius Prime Minister said that “there must be a quick resolution to resolve all issues related to the direct tax avoidance agreement between the two countries”.
“We both agreed that there must be quick resolution (on the issues) for certainty, clarity and predictability,” he said.
A proposed revision of the tax treaty has been hanging in the balance for a long time and there have been reports that Mauritius was not agreeable to certain suggestions made by India, which has been seeking to make the agreement stronger to check any possible round tripping of Indian funds through the Indian Ocean island nation.
The people of Indian descent account for a vast majority (about 70 per cent) of Mauritius population. The current Prime Minister’s father, late Seewoosagur Ramgoolam (also referred as Chacha Ramgoolam) was a leader in Mauritian independence movement and also served as the first Chief Minister and Prime Minister of Mauritius.
Seewoosagur Ramgoolam is also known as ‘Father of Nation’ of Mauritius and for leading the Labour Party for the rights of labourers and getting Mauritius independence from the United Kingdom in 1968.

John Kerry: US to start $5bn anti-terrorist fund

The US is setting up a $5 billion “terrorism partnership fund” to help other countries push back against radical extremists, Secretary of State John Kerry said on Wednesday. He told “CBS This Morning” that US foreign policy needs to reflect a “rapidly changing, more complex world where terrorism is the principal challenge.” In morning interviews, Kerry also defended President Barack Obama’s decision to terminate America’s combat role in Afghanistan by the end of the year, AP reported.

French police arrest daughter of suspected South Korea ferry tycoon

French police have arrested the daughter of a South Korean tycoon believed to be the owner of a ferry that sank last month in a disaster that left more than 300 people dead or missing, AP reported. Yoo Somena was detained early on Tuesday at her home near the Champs Élysées in Paris, officials said. Police were acting on an international arrest warrant issued on May 8 by South Korean officials who suspect she was involved in embezzlement from 2004 to 2013.

5.1 magnitude quake hits southern Iran

A 5.1 magnitude earthquake shook a southern Iranian city on Tuesday, US seismologists said, with the tremor felt as far away as Dubai but no immediate reports of casualties.
The quake struck at around 10 am (0430 GMT) and was centred 66 kilometres south of Qeshm by the Strait of Hormuz, the US Geological Survey said.Iran’s official IRNA news agency put the quake’s magnitude slightly higher at 5.2 and said there were no initial reports of casualties or damage.
The quake also shook the larger port city of Bandar Abbas and was felt across the Gulf in Dubai, where residential and office towers shook for around 10 seconds but were not evacuated.
Iran stands on several seismic fault lines. In April last year, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck southeastern Iran and neighbouring Pakistan, killing 40 people. A massive quake in December 2003 struck the southern city of Bam, killing 26,000 people and destroying its ancient mud-built citadel.

Israel has appealed to Interpol not to implement a Monday ruling of a Turkish court that issued arrest warrants for four former Israeli military commanders on trial in absentia over the 2010 killing of nine Turks, Hebrew-language daily newspaper Ma’ariv reported. The Turks were killed in an Israeli commando raid on Mavi Marmara, a Turkish ship that challenged Israel’s naval blockade of the Gaza Strip. However, Israel branded the Turkish court’s ruling as “tainted by political motives,” asking Interpol not to honor it, the daily reported. An Istanbul court requested an Interpol Red Notice for the arrest of four senior Israeli military chiefs days after the tenth Turkish citizen who was seriously injured in the 2010 raid died after four years in a coma.
Dutch police to be deployed to Jewish sites after Belgium attack
The Netherlands has decided to ramp up security measures at Jewish sites, deploying police to cultural centers, schools, and synagogues, Reuters reports. According to the Dutch Ministry of Security and Justice, the measures are only a precaution. The move follows a deadly shooting at the Jewish Museum in Brussels on Saturday, in which three people were killed by a Kalashnikov-wielding man. France has also said it will step up security measures, while French President Francois Hollande said there was “no doubt” the killing of two Israelis and a French woman were motivated by anti-Semitism.
54 killed in Nigeria in alleged Boko Haram attacks
Fifty-four people have been killed in northern Nigeria in two attacks allegedly carried out by Islamist group Boko Haram, AP reported, citing officials. According to police constable Abdullahi Mohammed, 24 soldiers and 21 policemen died in an attack Monday evening on Buni Yadi town in Nigeria’s Yobe state. In another attack, gunmen suspected to be from Boko Haram killed nine people in two remote villages in Borno, a local government official said. The official added that the armed men shot at villagers and burned their homes in Ashigashiya town. After taking control of the area, they hoisted their white flags with Arabic letters.
40 hunger-striking Palestinian detainees hospitalized in Israel
Forty hunger-striking Palestinian detainees were hospitalized in Israel this week, Israel Prison Authority spokesperson Sivan Weizman said, as cited by AP. Their conditions are “reasonable,” she said, adding that their fast has entered into a second month. About 240 detainees are on a hunger strike at Ramle prison, demanding their release and the halt of their undetermined “administrative detention,” which allows Israel to detain people without charge or trial. Most of the prisoners are Palestinians. Issa Karakeh, the Palestinian minister for prisoner affairs, reported that about 300 people have been fasting, adding that half of them are administrative detainees.

Russian prosecutors want 2 of 5 convicted men jailed for life in Politkovskaya case

Representatives from the Italian embassy on Tuesday collected the body of Italian journalist Andrea Rocchelli, who was killed in Slavyansk in eastern Ukraine, RIA Novosti reported, citing a source. The diplomats were presumably heading to Kharkov. The body of Andrey Mironov, a journalist and interpreter, who accompanied Rocchelli, reportedly remains in Slavyansk. Italian kidnapped in Syria is free
Italian journalist Federico Motka, kidnapped in war-torn Syria over a year ago, has been freed and safely transferred to Turkey, via the Akcakale border gate in the southeastern province of Sanliurfa. Tomorrow he will see his relatives in Italy, promised Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi on Twitter. 31-year-old Motka used to work in Syria as a coordinator for the Agency for Technical Cooperation and Development (ACTED) and was abducted by a group of armed men on March 13, 2013. Back in April four French journalists were freed in Syria after 10 months of captivity, also returning home via Turkey.
Vietnam says Chinese boat sank its fishing vessel in disputed waters
The head of Vietnam’s coastguard says a Chinese boat rammed and sank a Vietnamese fishing vessel in the disputed waters in the South China Sea on Monday, Reuters reports. The 10 fisherman who were on board the Vietnamese boat were rescued, said coastguard commander Nguyen Quang Dam. He added that the incident occurred 17 nautical miles from the massive oil rig China deployed between the Paracel islands and the Vietnamese coast. “A Vietnamese boat from the central city of Da Nang was deliberately encircled by 40 fishing vessels from China before it was attacked by a Chinese ship,” Dam told Reuters by telephone.

Abducted schoolgirls located – Nigeria’s defense chief
Nigeria’s Defense Chief Air Marshal Alex Barde said that the country’s military had located the more than 200 schoolgirls that were kidnapped by Islamist militant group Boko Haram. But, Barde added that the troops cannot use force to free the girls. “We can’t go and kill our girls in the name of trying to get them back,” he said. Sierra Leone records 1st Ebola outbreak, 5 dead
Five people have died in Sierra Leone’s first confirmed outbreak of Ebola virus, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Monday. Turkish court orders arrest of 4 Israeli generals over Gaza aid raid
The Istanbul 7th Court of Serious Crimes has ordered the arrest of four Israeli commanders who were allegedly involved in the raid on the Mavi Marmara aid ship off Gaza in 2010, Hurriyet Daily News said. The court also decided on Monday to request an Interpol Red Notice for the arrest of former Israeli Chief of Staff, Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi, former Naval Forces Cmdr. Eliezer Alfred Marom, former Military Intelligence chief Maj. Gen. Amos Yadlinir and former Air Forces Intelligence head Brig. Gen. Avishai Levi. They are all being tried in absentia. Prosecutors have demanded life sentences for the four for their role in the raid following a complaint filed by 33 relatives of the nine Turkish citizens who were killed aboard the Mavi Marmara.

Two former Philippines senators asked the Supreme Court on Monday to declare a new defense pact clinched with Washington unconstitutional. This is the first legal challenge to the pact. Israel approves 50 new settler homes in E. Jerusalem

At least 10 killed in India passenger train crash
A passenger express train slammed into a stationary freight train in northern India on Monday. At least 10 people were killed, with others feared trapped in the wreckage, an official in New Delhi told AFP. “What we know now is that six bogies of the train derailed following the collision and at least 10 people have died,” the Indian Railways official said.

The Thai king has officially endorsed the military coup that seized power in the country last Thursday, said General Prayuth Chan-ocha, leader of the uprising. Following a wave of violence in the northern state of Tamaulipas, the Mexican authorities arrested Juan Rodriguez Garcia, a man from the top of the Gulf cocaine-trafficking cartel. Garcia has been elbowing to become a new leader of the cartel after the arrest of his former boss Mario Ramirez Trevino last August. Obama makes surprise visit to Afghanistan
US President Barack Obama has paid a surprise visit to American troops stationed in Afghanistan, as the US marks the Memorial Day weekend. During the visit to Bagram Air Base, Obama said that he was close to taking a decision on the number of US soldiers that will remain in Afghanistan post 2014 withdrawal deadline. A bilateral deal between Kabul’s new president and Washington needs to be signed before Americans will stay to train Afghan security forces and conduct counterterrorism missions. A runoff in the Afghan presidential election will be held in June.
Boko Haram kills 28 in raids in Nigeria
At least 28 people have died after Boko Haram, an Al Qaeda affiliate, attacked three villages in northern Nigeria burning houses to the ground, the police announced. The assaults happened in Borno state in the heartland of Boko Haram’s increasing rampage. The worst incident, resulting in 20 casualties was in the town of Kerenua, near the Niger border. The United States, Britain, France and China last week offered Nigeria help to battle the Islamic insurgency in a mission to try to free the schoolgirls who were captured back in April and still remain hostage.
Former Thai PM released by military
Thailand’s former Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has been released after she reported to the Thai military, a number of media outlets report. On 23 May 2014 Yingluck was arrested with other political leaders, in the wake of a military coup which had occurred the previous day. The army seized power after months of turmoil and deadly clashes in Bangkok. The military rule is reportedly trying to summon around 150 influential politicians in the country in an effort to weld country’s political future.

Cameron : EU ‘too big and too interfering’

UK Prime Minister David Cameron has called Brussels too big and bossy. The 28-nation bloc voted a record number of EU Parliament seats to anti-integration parties in the recent elections.
Prime Minister Cameron is in Brussels for an informal meeting to discuss the results of last week’s EU elections. Addressing the press in the Belgium capital, Cameron criticized the EU, saying it had got too big for its boots.
“We need an approach that recognizes that Brussels has become too big, too bossy, too interfering. It should be ‘nation states’ wherever possible, Europe only where necessary, and we need people running this organization who really understand that,” he told reporters.
The results of the recent EU elections showed a marked swing towards euro skepticism in the 28-nation bloc, as around 30 percent of the seats went to parties with anti-integration policies.
In Britain, the UK Independence Party triumphed in the elections, receiving 27.5 percent of the vote. Cameron previously described UKIP as “a bunch of loonies and closet racists.” But now he says such results could not be simply “shrugged off” and this was a sign something needed to be changed in the leadership of the EU.
Elsewhere, the most notable was arguably France’s National Front Party headed by Marine Le Pen, which has been criticized for racist and xenophobic views. The National Front garnered 25 percent of the vote with Le Pen describing her party’s victory as a prelude to a political “earthquake” in the European Union.
European leaders must now address the issue of who will replace European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso when he steps down from the post in October. Cameron is strongly opposed to the current favorite, former prime minister of Luxembourg, Jean-Claude Juncker, who is backed by German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
Junker announced on Sunday that he had the only legitimate right to the presidency given that his party, The European People’s Party, has the majority of seats in the parliament, with 212 out of 751.
Leader of UKIP Nigel Farage has claimed that there is “nobody more fanatical about building the United States of Europe” than Junker and his candidacy has come “just at the moment that the European electors have made it clear they are going in the wrong direction.”
Anti-EU sentiment has been on the rise in the UK following the financial crisis that has crippled parts of the Union. Cameron has promised to push for a renegotiation of the conditions of Britain’s membership to the Union and limit Brussels’s powers.

Irani’s affidavit filed with the Election Commission of India in 2004 as mentioned below that she holds a bachelor’s degree in arts from the Delhi University (School of Correspondence). She passed out in 1996, says the declaration signed by her.
Interestingly, in the recent 2014 election affidavit (below) with the Election Commission, Irani claimed that she only completed Part I (first year) of her bachelor’s degree in commerce in the year 1994 from Delhi University’s School of Open Learning (correspondence).
Obviously, both cannot be right. So the question remains: Is Irani an under-graduate as declared by her in 2014, or a graduate as she claimed in 2004?
While the newly sworn in HRD minister has remained mum throughout, her party colleague and fellow minister Uma Bharti came to her defence on Wednesday. “I want to ask Madam Sonia Gandhi, what is her qualification,” the fiery leader hit back.

65th National Basketball Championship for Junior Men and Women Day three — Karnataka & Maharashtra Women triumph
[Gopalakrishnan R] Kochi, 28th May 2014: Putting behind the morale sapping losses from the previous day, junior women from Maharashtra and Karnataka registered memorable wins this morning in the 65th National Basketball Championship for Junior Mena and Women that is underway at the Rajiv Gandhi Indoor Stadium, Kadavanthra in Kochi, Kerala.
Maharashtra’s Malayalee captain Sruthi Menon top scored with 24 points as her side beat Haryana 63-56. Both teams are now locked 1-1 after two round robin games. Karnataka junior women too recorded their first league win of this tournament over last year’s semifinalist Tamil Nadu, 88-65. Karnataka’s former youth international Bhadavya’s 42 points proved to be the difference between the two southern sides.
Late last evening, Kerala women stayed undefeated by beating Maharashtra 74-58. With its perfect 2-0 record, Kerala is on top of Group B in the upper pool.

Dear press friends,
As you all know that the victims of the illegal slum demolition
supported by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Ghar Bachao Ghar Banao
Andola (GBGBA) in Mulund (east) are holding a relay fast and five of
the AAP and GBGBA volunteers sitting on indefinite fast in protest of
the demolition and with a demand of the rehabilitation of the victims
since last six days and yet there is no response from the government
and the administration to their demand.
The six days long demonstration-fast is going on a roofless platform
in Mulund. The government’s test of the helpless and poor slum
dwellers is unbearable, even the administration is not showing any ear
to listen the demand and to be of any relief to the suffers. Looking
at this indifference of the government and its administration, we have
planned under the guidance and support of renowned social
activist/politician Medha Patkar to take up this before the
authorities by moving at their doors to echo our demands.
As per the plan, we will be assembling before the SRA in Bandra to
hold the demonstration there tomorrow and requesting the authorities
to come down to listen and accept the demand.

On April 29, 2014, Gaza’s Ark—a refurbished boat that was set to sail in June from the port of Gaza out to sea carrying Palestinian export goods—was sabotaged when explosive devices caused substantial damage to its hull. Repairing the boat will cost about $30,000. The attack is still under investigation. [1]
Gaza’s Ark can be ready to sail this fall—but we need your support to make it happen.
Human rights activists have called for an International Freedom for Gaza Day on May 31 to mark the fourth anniversary of the attack on the Mavi Marmara, which killed nine Turkish and a Turkish-American human rights activist—the tenth died this week after four years in a coma [2]—as they attempted to challenge the blockade of Gaza. Actions drawing attention to the siege will take place in Gaza, Turkey, and around the world.
If you participate in social media, you have a unique opportunity to help raise the profile of the International Freedom Day for Gaza and Gaza’s Ark.
Here’s what you can do:
