India settle for bronze after 2-3 defeat to Japan in Uber Cup
24052014
Ace shuttlers Saina Nehwal and P V Sindhu came up with spectacular victories but the Indian women’s team still had to be satisfied with the bronze medal after it went down fighting 2-3 to five-time champions Japan in its maiden semifinals appearance in the Uber Cup on Friday.
Saina and Sindhu won the first two singles to put the Indian team 2-0 ahead but they failed to win the third singles and the two doubles match to see their hopes go up in smoke at the Siri Fort Sports complex in New Delhi.
Olympic bronze medallist Saina gave India a positive start when she produced a dominating performance to get across world number 12 Minatsu Mitani 21-12 21-13 in a 41-minute match.
World Championship bronze winner, Sindhu, then displayed her brilliance with yet another edge-of-the seat victory over world no 13 Sayaka Takahashi 19-21 21-18 26-24 in an energy-sapping one hour and 12 minutes match to put India 2-0 ahead.
World number four pair of Misaki Matsutomo and Ayaka Takahashi, however, brought Japan back into the tie with a hard-fought 21-12 20-22 21-16 win over Commonwealth Games gold medallists Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa.
And then PC Thulasi tried her bit before going down to 2011 All England Championship runners-up and world no 16 Eriko Hirose 14-21 15-21 in the third singles as Japan made it 2-2.
It all boiled down to Saina and Sindhu to take India through and the inexperienced doubles pair, playing only for the second time, went down 14-21 11-21 to world number five combo of Miyuki Maeda and Reika Kakiiwa.
Japan will now take on China in the finals tomorrow. China beat Korea 3-0 in another semifinal clash.
Earlier, Saina dominated the proceedings from the start and led 11-6 at the interval. Things didn’t change much after the break as Saina kept engaging her rival in rallies and waited for Mitani to commit mistakes, to eventually pocket the game with a smart dribble at the net.
In the second game, Mitani managed to open up a small 6-3 lead, but Saina surged ahead with a couple of smashes to lead 9-8 and had her nose ahead at the break at 11-8.
Saina came up with a series of sharp cross-court smashes to extend the lead and finally sealed the issue rather comfortably when Mitani hit wide.

Gunmen open fire inside bus, kill 6 in El Salvador
24052014Gunmen open fire inside bus, kill 6 in El Salvador
Posted on May 24, 2014
Gunmen boarded a bus in a town near the Salvadoran capital and opened fired on passengers, killing six, including three law enforcement officials, police said.
The Attorney General’s Office said a police investigator and two prison guards who worked at a maximum security prison were among the victims.Another five people were wounded during the attack in the town of San Luis Talpa near San Salvador, said national police director Rigoberto Pleites.
Pleites said witnesses told police the assailants were gang members dressed in uniforms similar to those issued to state road maintenance workers.
But he said investigators haven’t confirmed the attackers belonged to a gang. Authorities did not provide a motive for the attack.
But police assistant director Mauricio Ramirez said there have been threats of increased violence in the Central American country in the coming days. He did not provide any other details.
In 2012, the Mara Salvatrucha and the rival Mara 18 street gangs agreed to a truce.
Homicides dropped from 12 per day in 2011 to an average of 6.8 per day in 2013.
But in the first three months of 2014, the homicide rate has spiked back up to about 8.9 killings per day.
Ramirez said officials have ordered that no police officers take time off in the coming days after at least 21 people were killed in the country in less than 24 hours.
The men’s bodies were found half-buried in a clandestine grave in the town of Jaquilisco and members of the MS-13 gang are suspected in the killings, police said.

Thai leaders, Yingluck, to be in detention
24052014
Thailand’s army on Saturday said it will detain former premier Yingluck Shinawatra and top leaders of the ousted government for up to a week to give them “time to think”, as the military junta intensified crackdown after seizing power in a bloodless coup this week.
| |
Addressing the media for the first time after staging the coup on Thursday, the military declined to specify where the detainees were held but said they were safe.
“They will be detained for up to one week depending on how directly they were involved (in Thailand’s political conflict),” army spokesman Colonel Winthai Suvaree said.
The military junta continued its post-coup crackdown today and summoned 35 more people, including political activists and, for the first time, academics, to “maintain peace and order.”
It was not clear whether they would be detained. Deputy army spokesman Col Weerachon Sukondhapatipak said that all the detained politicians were being well-treated and that the aim of the military was to achieve a political compromise.
“This is in a bid for everybody who is involved in the conflict to calm down and have time to think…We don’t intend to limit their freedom but it is to relieve the pressure,” Weerachon said.
Sporadic protests spread in the capital for a second day today as scores of demonstrators who were opposing the coup defied the military’s ban on large gatherings and shouted slogans.
The army have deployed soldiers to clear protesters and enforce martial law on the streets here.
Army chief General Prayuth Chan-ocha, who has appointed himself the new Prime Minister, is expected to remain in the role for the immediate future, a source close to the coup leader said, Bangkok Post reported.
The army chief and members of the junta yesterday met top government officials, provincial governors and representatives from several sectors who were ordered to report to the National Peace and Order Maintaining Council (NPOMC).
“Everything in the country must be all right before an election is held,” the 60-year-old tough-talking general said.
46-year-old Yingluck was yesterday ordered to report to the army along with over 100 others, including top figures in the now-deposed government and her Pheu Thai party and many of their fierce political rivals.
Yingluck, who had been in power until being removed by the Constitutional Court this month for abuse of power, was kept for several hours at a military facility here and then driven to an undisclosed location.
The army also banned 155 prominent political figures from leaving the country without permission and threatened to arrest those who disobey its orders.
Thailand’s armed forces, which have staged at least 12 coups since the end of the absolute monarchy in 1932, acted after months of political violence claimed 28 lives and left hundreds wounded.
Unlike the last coup in 2006, there were no tanks on the streets and only few soldiers were deployed to guard key buildings.
The military has thrown out the Constitution it drew up in 2007 after a previous coup, except for Section 2, which acknowledges that the King is the head of state.
It also ordered all television and radio stations to suspend their usual programmes and replace with the army’s statements.
However, authorities yesterday allowed five TV stations to resume normal broadcasts.
Thailand has been marred by bouts of political violence for more than seven years.
The latest unrest began in November last year, when anti-government protesters launched a campaign to oust Yingluck’s government.
They accuse Yingluck of acting as a proxy for her fugitive brother, former premier Thaksin, who was ousted in a coup in 2006.
Former Thai PM detained, military outlines reform agenda
Thailand’s former premier Yingluck Shinawatra and some members of her powerful business family were detained on Friday as the military junta tightened its grip on power a day after staging a bloodless coup.
Scores of demonstrators who were opposing the coup confronted soldiers as tensions mounted in the capital with the army deploying soldiers to clear protesters and enforcing martial law on the streets here.
Yingluck, 46, and scores of politicians from the deposed government had been told to report to the military on Friday. She was kept for several hours at a military facility here and then driven to an undisclosed location.
Army chief General Prayuth Chan-ocha, who has appointed himself the new Prime Minister, also met key officials, and outlined his plan for the country. He told them reform must come before any elections.
The 60-year-old tough-talking general had summoned governors, business leaders and civil servants for the meeting. Six of Thailand’s most senior military officers were appointed by Prayuth to run the country, with provincial commanders supervising local government.
General Prayuth told the meeting: “I want all civil servants to help organise the country. We must have economic, social and political reforms before elections. If the situation is peaceful, we are ready to return power to the people.” Rice farmers will be one of the first priorities of the new administration, the coup leader said.
He said a budget had been made available to make payments to farmers, who are owed hundreds of millions of baht under the failed pledging scheme run by the former Pheu Thai Party-led government. He said he believed the farmers would get their money within 15 to 20 days, Bangkok Post reported.
Yingluck was among approximately 150 people who had been summoned by General Prayuth to restore peace in the country following months of turmoil.
Yingluck arrived at the Royal Thai Army auditorium in Thewes in a black bullet-proof Volkswagen van, with a vanguard of bodyguards.
The army also banned 155 prominent political figures from leaving the country without permission and threatened to arrest those who disobey its orders.
Traffic was thin on the normally crowded streets, but many people returned to work. Unlike the last coup in 2006, there were no tanks on the streets and only few soldiers were deployed to guard key buildings.
The army on Thursday suspended the Constitution and declared nationwide night curfew from 10 pm to 5 am after months of anti-government protests left the country in limbo.

Sharif to visit India to attend Modi’s swearing-in
24052014
Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to visit India on Monday to attend the swearing- in ceremony of Prime Minister-designate Narendra Modi, ending the suspense over his visit amid reports that there was stiff opposition from hardliners in the establishment.
An official of the Prime Minister Office told media that Sharif accepted the invitation and will visit India on Monday to attend Modi’s oath-taking ceremony.
He did not give the details about the visit and Sharif’s agenda but an official of the Foreign Office said that a separate meeting between the two prime ministers might take place where Pakistan will bring all issues on the table.
Sharif took time before making a decision as he wanted to create consensus before travelling to Delhi.
He spent two solid days talking to political parties, leaders and officials of the military.
A senior leader of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz told PTI that Sharif wanted to make the trip meaningful and not just a PR exercise.
He rejected the impression that Pakistan took time, saying that consultations were essential as Modi had made hard hitting speeches against Pakistan during his election campaign.
Radio Pakistan reported that the occasion will provide an opportunity to devise a strategy for moving forward towards bringing peace to the region and normalise ties with India for which Pakistan has always expressed determination and resolve.
The delay in Sharif confirming his attendance in the oath ceremony was attributed to opposition from hardliners in the army establishment.
Modi has invited all the leaders of member states of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) to the ceremony.
Prime Minister Sharif had telephoned Modi to congratulate him on his party’s election victory and invited him to visit Pakistan after assuming office.
Other key SAARC leaders, Sri Lankan President President Mahinda Rajapaksa, Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai, Bhutan Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay, Nepal Prime Minister Sushil Koirala and Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom have confirmed that they will attend the ceremony.
Earlier, Sharif’s daughter Maryam tweeted that cordial relations with the new Indian government should be cultivated.
“I personally think cordial relations with new Indian govt should be cultivated. Will help remove psychological barriers, fear & misgivings,” she tweeted.
She followed it up with another tweet, “It’s upon the leaders to lead their countries & ppl to peace & conciliation.”
The decision to travel India drew immediate backlash, with outlawed Jamaat-ud-Dawa chief Hafiz Saeed, who is mastermind of the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, asking Sharif to review his decision as it was not in the interest of Pakistan.

Modi’s New Bold Beginning in South Asia
24052014
In one bold stroke of statesmanship, Prime Minister designate Mr. Narendra Damodar Modi has raised India’s stature not only in South Asia but all over the world. He has disarmed even his critics like Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti and perhaps pre-empted future opposition from Mamta Banerjee to a Tessta river treaty with Bangladesh. And indeed he has demonstrated his resolve to take the high ground vis a vis India’s neighbours and not allow petty provincial considerations preventing a more cooperative environment in South Asia by action and not just words. For some of us who have been promoting the cause of South Asian regional cooperation, Mr. Modi’s invitation to heads of neighbouring governments for the swearing in ceremony on the 26th is a giant step in the right direction.I had heard about his desire to focus his foreign policy on India’s neighbourhood, but that he would do so even before taking office is beyond expectations. I hope the ministry of external relations and our obdurate and opaque security agencies will take the cue and support the cause of making borders in South Asia irrelevant within the first term of this government.
Dr. Manmohan Singh, whose highest priority was to achieve a regionally integrated South Asia, would surely be ruing his inability to lead from the front. Instead allowing the diplomatic and security establishment and the myopic minions within his party to ensnare him by their sophistry and projections of false security threats. By extending this invitation, Mr. Modi has shown not only that he has his clear priorities, often out of the bureaucratic box, but also that in foreign policy he is more likely to follow Mr. Atal Behari Vajpayee’s style of making the policy announcement first and leaving it to the bureaucracy to implement it. Mr. Vajpayee had done exactly that when he announced the Indo-Sri Lanka free trade agreement on a visit to Colombo, taking Raisina Hill and Udyog Bhawan by complete surprise.
But in doing so, Mr. Modi must have hugely disappointed all those who in their crass and dangerous single-minded focus on increasing their channels’ TRPs have tried to convert India’s relations with its neighbours in to a gladiator sport. These television gladiators were hoping that Mr Modi will spout into jingoism and raise the level of xenophobia in India and subsequently in the neighbouring countries as well. How thoroughly dejected they must feel that he has instead forced them to discuss a future for South Asia that is potentially peaceful and prosperous based on bilateral and regional cooperation. I am not at all surprised that there has been a sudden hush on the channels because this is completely against their expectations. The media has been cheated of the man whom they supported in the hope he will display his 56″ chest even in India’s relations with its neighbours. They are bound to be further disappointed because in Mr. Modi they probably have a realist strategic leader who realizes that the true success for India is not in browbeating or being a big brother to its smaller neighbours but in ensuring that India eliminates the scourge of unemployment and making its people prosperous in the next two decades. He knows that if he succeeds in achieving this objective, India’s neighbours, benefitting from India’s huge, rapidly expanding and open domestic markets, will recognize its stature. As everywhere else, so in international relations, respect and regard are earned and not demanded.
It will also disappoint those who wanted to see Mr. Modi be captive to RSS ideology, which according to their distorted perception will have India breaking off relations with all Muslim countries. This perception suffers from two fatal flaws. First, it assumes that Mr. Modi is so beholden to the RSS that he will seek his directions from Nagpur for all policy initiatives. He has demonstrated otherwise in Gujarat and now by this bold invitation has reinforced this independence. Second, it believes RSS ideology prohibits India from improving its relations with Muslim states. I have no claims whatsoever on understanding the RSS traditions and ideology as I have not had the chance to study them, but from what I can see and by sheer common sense, no organization professing to pursue national interest, can possibly have a stand of minimizing relations with countries on whom India is so critically dependent for its energy security. I hope we will at this time of paradigmatic shift, shed our stereotype perceptions and come together on the basis of real experience and evaluate it on the benchmark of national interest. Nothing else matters.
All policy initiatives, whether in the domain of foreign policy or domestic developments, must be taken to serve the national interest. And by putting the ball firmly in Nawaz Sharif’s court with this invitation, Mr. Modi has unambiguously lifted India’s stock, thereby serving our national interest. Those who argue, as unfortunately some senior journalists did on the electronic media on Wednesday, that such a sudden invitation will diminish India’s prestige or standing in case the invitation was not accepted should know better. This is a juvenile argument that merits to be junked immediately as it is premised upon a sense of false ego and a wrong understanding of national pride. Leaders make their nations proud by being statesmen and rising above petty issues.
From Modi’s point of view, the historical moment of a non-Congress party government coming in to office in Delhi with an absolute majority of its own for the very first time, is a moment to be shared with one and all and specially with India’s neighbours. Those who do not accept the invitation will be seen as being churlish and petulant by the global community. Those who do will be comforted that India wants to share its moments of joy and glory with them and sees them as equal partners. For me this is an unprecedented act of statesmanship at a time when nation states cover borders with barbed wire and bayonets. Such action prompts me to strengthen my resolve to do whatever I can to push forward the agenda of making South Asian borders as places where nations interact.
