Panetta: US combat in Afghanistan to end next year

US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta has said he hopes the US troops in Afghanistan can end their combat role by as early as middle of next year, eighteen months before the NATO mission in the country is due to end.

Mr Panetta said he hopes American troops should be able to make transition from a combat role to one of training and assistance by the middle or the later part of next year.
