Egypt's interim government has expelled the Turkish ambassador from Cairo, further straining bilateral relations.
The military-backed government on Saturday told the ambassador to leave Egypt. It also announced that diplomatic relations with Turkey will be downgraded and no ambassador will be sent to Ankara.
The government cited Turkey's interference in Egypt's internal affairs as the reason for the decision. It accused Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's administration of repeatedly criticizing it over the ouster of President Mohamed Morsi in July and extending help to Morsi's supporters.
Erdogan's Islamist government had enjoyed close ties with the Morsi Administration.
