US economy is to face recession in 2013

US Congressional Budget Office warns the country may fall into recession next year if it implements plans to cut spending and end its low tax policy. Budget Office said on Wednesday that the current tightening plan would reduce the budget deficit by almost 500 billion dollars compared to the previous year. This would bring the shortfall to just above 640 billion dollars for the fiscal year through September 2013.
But it says such sudden belt-tightening would result in an economic contraction of half-a-percent in the fourth quarter of next year, compared to a year earlier. The Office says the jobless rate would rise to about 9 percent in the second half of 2013. It’s currently in the 8 percent range.Democrats and Republicans have separately submitted bills to avoid falling off the so-called “fiscal cliff.” Media agencies

Debutant Vani Kapoor takes four-shot lead over Sharmila Nicollet:Hero KGA Women’s pro Golf

Bangalore, August 23: Vani Kapoor shrugged aside the nervousness of a professional debut with a stunning four-under 68 that gave her a four-shot lead going into the third and final round of the Rs. 10 lakh Hero-KGA Women’s Pro Golf 2012.
Vani, who trains under DLF pro Anitya Chand, had dominated the amateur Tour till recently. She admitted to being a bit jittery on the opening day. But on the second day she was once again her confident self. She blazed through with five birdies and just one bogey on a fine golfing day to move four shots clear of overnight leader, Sharmila Nicollet, who struggled on the greens during her round of 76.
Vani’s total for 36 holes is 143 while Sharmila is at three-over 147 and in second place behind in the first leg of the 2012 season of Hero-WGAI Tour.
Apart from Vani, veteran Smriti Mehra (71) was the only other player to bring home a sub-par round on Thursday. Smriti, winner seven times in 15 starts last year, made up for the slow start on the first day, as she added a 71 to the first day 77. At four-over 148, she is five behind Vani and one behind Sharmila.
Nalini Singh Siwach (76) and Neha Tripathi (78) were fourth and fifth at 150 and 151 as the whole field, barring Vani Kapoor, had a tough time on the greens.
“I was very nervous yesterday and went into water with my first shot as a pro. But then I managed to get to a 75. So my first goal today was a sub-par round. When I got to two-under without any bogeys on the front nine, I put a figure of four-under for the round,” said Vani. “But on the tenth hole after a driver and 7-Iron I tried to play safe and left myself 25 feet on the green. I missed my second putt (for par) from four feet. But the good thing it was the only bogey on my card.”
Accompanied by her girlish giggle, she added, “All parts of my game worked today. I had 11 fairways and 14 greens in regulation, though the 30 putts could have been a bit better. But I am happy. First pro tournament and I am in lead, so I can’t complain.”
Talking of pressure, Vani said, “There is no pressure really. I have played with all of them. Last year I won once in a pro event and was third in another and my game is in good shape. The course was playing fine and it was not windy either, so it was just a matter of being in better frame of mind.”
Vani’s good hitting also meant she had very few long putts like the 15-footer on the sixth, which was her first birdie. The birdie on ninth came from eight feet, while the birdies on 13th, 15th and 16th were inside six, three and four feet respectively.
Smriti had three birdies against two bogeys. “I played better today. The pins have been somewhat tough so the scores will not be as low. I was more steady today.”
Sharmila, who started the day with a double bogey after visiting the water hazard on the left off the first, was four-over within first four holes. Birdies on the fifth, her only birdie on a par-five, and eighth put some confidence back. On the back nine, she had two more bogeys and no birdies.
“I couldn’t buy a putt. I must have missed at least four from inside five feet. On the 11th I had an eagle putt but I ended with a par,” said a disappointed Sharmila. “But there is still one more day to go. The idea is to find rhythm in my game. Hopefully it will be there soon and I am working on it.”
Vani playing her first event as a pro will go out in the lead group with Sharmila Nicollet and Smriti Mehra and it should see some exciting action between what are quite easily the three strongest stars of Indian women’s golf.
The next two events will also be held in Bangalore, with the second leg at Clover Greens and the third leg at Prestige Golfshire, with a purse of Rs, five lakhs each.
The 2012-13 season is scheduled to have 10 events plus two Majors, one at the start of the season and one right at the end. The 10 events will carry a total purse of Rs, 70 lakhs, an increase of 66 per cent over the last year’s purse of Rs. 42 lakhs.
Leading scores (After two rounds):
143: Vani Kapoor (75-68)
147: Sharmila Nicollet (71-76)
148: Smriti Mehra (77-71)
150: Nalini Singh Siwach (74-76)
151: Neha Tripathi (73-78)
152: Saaniya Sharma (73-79) and Aditi Ashok (A) (74-78)
153: Shraddhanjali Singh (78-75)

CULTURAL AGENDA SEPTEMBER 2012

Waste, recycling and art, music and poetry, and Peruvian cinema and cuisine, will be some of the topics we have programmed for September at the Instituto Cervantes.

SCIENCE AND HISTORY

Thursday 13th (6:30 PM)
Talk: “Sources, exposure and risks associated with e-waste”
by Silvia Lacorte Bruguera

Electronic waste (e-waste) refers to consumer and business electronic equipment that are near or at the end of its useful life. It applies to computers, televisions, stereos, copiers, and fax machines, among other electronic products. Although many of these products can be reused, refurbished, or recycled to reduce the volume that goes to disposal, most electronic discards are often inappropriately treated. It is reported that two thirds of electrical and electronic waste in the European Union go to landfills and to sub-standard treatment sites in or outside the European Union. Inadequately treated e-waste poses environmental and health risks.

In this conference, several aspects related to e-waste will be presented and discussed. The generation of e-waste from different countries will permit to have an overview of the magnitude of the problem. Global managing the e-waste is a new challenge and a difficulty that has to be resolved considering social, political, economical, environmental and health viewpoints. Modern electronics can contain up to 60 different elements, ranging from metals, flame retardants, plastic and glass, among others; many are valuable, some are hazardous and some are both. Recycling techniques will be briefly discussed, according to European or other legislations which define the conditions and terms for electronic waste disposal and treatment. On the other side, the uncontrolled discarding or inappropriate waste management/recycling generates significant hazardous emissions, with severe impacts on health and environment. First, primary emissions or compounds able to migrate of leach from electronic waste will be identified. Also, secondary and tertiary toxic emissions will be discussed in terms of compounds generated during the treatment of e-waste. Depending on the physico-chemical properties of these compounds, some can leach to water or adsorb to soil or sediment, while more volatile compounds are emitted to atmosphere. The effects they may cause to the environment will be highlighted. Finally, health risks associated with the improper handling of these materials will be discussed, since in most cases, there is a lack of knowledge on the effects metals and organic compounds associated to e-waste can cause to humans, especially, to infants.

These are times of splendour but also of great contrasts and profound changes, especially for women. A period in history in which there existed prohibition in the United States, the proclamation of the Republic in Spain arose, and New York begins to move to Paris as a cultural city in the world. Ultimately, this is a fascinating period in time that the author has managed to recreate carefully, agility and with passion.

As a part of the project, SAP will automate several operational areas including, tracking and control of funds; budget and expense management, accounting; management of local assets; project and scheme implementation and citizen services. SAP will also facilitate trained resources to operate the solution, and provide its expertise during the course of the project. RGIIM-S will provide SAP with the necessary advisory support to gain understanding of the local environment, help identify project sites and liaison with local administration bodies where required.
Configured on SAP Business ByDesign, a fully integrated business management solution delivered on demand, this project will result in improved transparency, control and governance. It will be initiated at the semi-urban localities of Mawlai Nonglum and Mawdatbaki, and will subsequently be rolled out to a village Dorbar jointly identified by SAP and RGIIM-S.
“SAP’s project for the Mawlai area will provide the local headman and citizens reliable access to records and services, better insight into budgeting and spending, and support quicker decision making, without a complex and cumbersome IT infrastructure”, said, Prof Keya Sengupta, Director, RGIIM-S. “We are pleased to collaborate with SAP on this initiative, and will support this by way of advising SAP on the local aspects through RGIIM-S Centre for Development for the North East Region (CEDNER),” she added.
“Initiatives like these echoes SAP’s global interest in helping Governments run better,” said Adaire Fox-Martin, Senior Vice President Industry Business Solutions, SAP Asia Pacific Japan “SAP’s strategy for an inclusive, effective and transparent government includes good governance, user empowerment, community engagement and improving services for rural and urban resilience. We intend to replicate this unique paradigm in many more villages and hence improve lives.”
RGIIM-S is an autonomous management school set up by the Government of India, with a vision of expansion and mobilisation of facilities for offering good quality management education, research and dissemination of information in the North Eastern region of India. Till date the Institute has by means of its expertise and innovative approaches stood committed to the idea of being socially relevant in the area of its operations.
