Hope EC lifts ban on Azam as well: Akhilesh

21042014

Hope EC lifts ban on Azam as well: Akhilesh
After the Election Commission revoked ban on Amit Shah’s participation in poll campaign in Uttar Pradesh, Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav hoped the restriction on SP leader Mohd Azam Khan too would be lifted.
“The EC has imposed ban on Azam without going through his reply…I hope, the Commission will soon lift his ban too (as it has done in case of Narendra Modi’s close aide),” Yadav told reporters in reply to a question.
“We will put our legal view on the issue at the opportune time,” he said.
On being asked about party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav’s statement that a number of BJP leaders, who are against Modi, are in touch with him, Yadav said Modi was made PM candidate under RSS pressure.
“He has been made PM candidate under pressure of RSS, A number of BJP leaders did not want this… It’s known to everyone,” he said.
Asked specifically whether they were in touch with BJP leaders, Yadav said “miltey rahtey hain” (they keep meeting) but did not elaborate.
On claims by BJP leaders Uma Bharti and Kalyan Singh that SP legislators were touch with them, Yadav said they were spreading rumours and EC should take cognisance. Yadav later flagged off SP’s “video-on-wheels” vehicle for poll campaign.

Bismillah’s family turns down BJP’s offer

Bismillah’s family turns down BJP’s offer to be Modi’s proposer

Ustad Bismillah
Late shehnai maestro Ustad Bismillah Khan’s family on Monday refused to be drawn into the election battleground from Varanasi and turned down to become a proposer for Bharatiya Janata Party Prime Ministerial nominee Narendra Modi in Varanasi.
Bismillah Khan’s son Zamin Hussain Bismillah has said that he wants to keep the family away from politics.

He said that some BJP functionaries had suggested that they should be a proposer for Modi when he files the nomination from Varanasi on April 24. He said that he consulted the family and everyone agreed that they should not back one or the other candidate.
Modi is expected to visit the Kal Bharati and Kasi Vishwanath temples before he leads a roadshow to the collectorate to file his nomination.

AAP strongly condemns the hate speech given by Pravin Togadia in Bhavnagar

21042014
Aam Aadmi Party strongly condemns the hate speech given by Vishwa Hindu Parishad’s (VHP) president Pravin Togadia in Bhavnagar, Gujarat on Saturday evening targeting Muslims for buying properties in certain areas.
This is an extremely shocking and a shameful act and goes against the constitution of India which provides equality and freedom for every citizen.
There is no place for such violent and communal acts in our democracy which has a potential to destabilize our secular foundation. AAP demands that Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi should publicly repudiate this act, take strict action against Togadia and the mob that gathered on that night and assure no such incidents will be allowed in future. If  no action is taken against Togadia and his followers, Modi’s complicity in such actions will become clear.
As per media reports, Togadia gave a provocative speech in which he gave the Muslim family 48 hours to vacate their houses, failing which he asked his group of  followers to take forcible possession of the house and fight a legal battle later which will go on for years.
Togadia also threatened them with violence and asked his followers to “go with stones, tyres and tomatoes” and that there is nothing to fear. Finally he confessed to similar crimes committed by him in past and the affected Muslims had lost both property and money.
Coming as it does on the heels of the BJP candidate from Navada Lok Sabha constituency in Bihar, Giriraj Singh’s statement that those who oppose Modi will be sent to Pakistan, it shows that the BJP and its associated organisations like the VHP are trying to inflame communal feelings and communalise the situation in the country for votes.
The communallly provocative statements of BJP incharge for Uttar Presdesh, Amit Shah are also designed to do the same, as are the statements of some leaders of the Samajwadi party like Azam Khan.
The AAP also demands that the Election Commission of India should direct immediate registration of an FIR against Togadia and the Commisssion should take strict action against him, so that he is not allowed to vitiate the peaceful atmosphere during elections.

President says ferry crew’s actions ‘tantamount to murder”

21042014

SKorea: President says ferry crew
The actions of the captain and crew of a capsized South Korean ferry were “tantamount to murder,” President Park Guen-Hye said on Monday, condemning their “unimaginable” decision to escape while hundreds were still trapped in the sinking vessel.
Park’s denunciation, in which she vowed to hold all those responsible for the disaster “criminally accountable,” followed the release of a transcript showing the panic and indecision that paralysed decision-making on the bridge as the 6,825-tonne Sewol listed and capsized Wednesday morning.

The confirmed death toll stood at 64 but was expected to rise dramatically with 238 people still unaccounted for.
“The actions of the captain and some crew members were utterly incomprehensible, unacceptable and tantamount to murder,” the presidential Blue House quoted Park as saying in a meeting with senior aides.
“Not only my heart, but the hearts of all South Koreans have been broken and filled with shock and anger,” said Park, who had been heckled Thursday when she met relatives of the hundreds of passengers still missing — most of them schoolchildren.
The families have criticised the official response to the disaster, saying the initial rescue effort was inadequate and mismanaged. The president said it was increasingly clear that Captain Lee Joon-Seok had unnecessarily delayed the evacuation of passengers as the ferry started sinking, and then “deserted them” by escaping with most of his crew members.
“This is utterly unimaginable, legally and ethically,” she said. Lee was arrested on Saturday along with a helmsman and the ship’s relatively inexperienced third officer, who was in charge of the bridge when the ship first ran into trouble.
A transcript released yesterday of the final radio communications between the Sewol and marine transport control underlined the confusion that reined as the vessel listed sharply to one side after making a distress call.
Marine control ordered the crew to ensure all passengers were wearing life jackets, while the ship repeatedly questioned whether vessels were on hand to rescue people once they started to abandon ship. “Make them wear a life ring at least and let them float.
Now!” the control official insisted. In the end, the evacuation order was only given around 40 minutes after the ship ran into trouble, by which time it was listing so heavily that escape was almost impossible. “Precious minutes just wasted,” was the front page verdict of the Dong-A Ilbo daily today.

Guides, climbers cancel Everest expeditions after tragedy

Distraught Nepalese guides and climbers cancelled expeditions on Mount Everest Monday after at least 13 colleagues died in an avalanche, as anger mounted at poor payments for sherpas who take huge risks on the world´s highest peak.
Sherpas already grief-stricken at the loss of colleagues have told they are considering whether to halt climbs to protest at pay and poor welfare provisions. The bodies of 13 local sherpa guides have been pulled from the snow and another three are thought to be still buried in the avalanche which hit Friday morning, the worst single accident in the mountain´s history. Another nine were rescued alive from the avalanche, which struck the group of sherpas as they hauled gear up the mountain for international climbers who were waiting at Everest base camp below.
Seattle-based Alpine Ascents International, which lost four sherpas in the accident with another still missing, has decided to cancel its expedition, according to its sirdar (sherpa captain).”We have lost five members of our team. To respect them, we will not be going ahead with our expedition,” said Lakpa Rita Sherpa, who has summited Everest 17 times.
“This was one of the worst days on the mountain and all those who died are sherpas, so many of those left don´t want to go ahead,” Sherpa told from base camp.
US-based Discovery Channel also cancelled an expedition after losing its team of sherpas in the accident, it said in a statement. The channel was planning a live broadcast of the first winged jumpsuit flight off the summit.
Other teams still at base camp are weighing up whether to go ahead with their expeditions, with many too distraught to climb. Ang Tshering Sherpa, president of the Nepal Mountaineering Association, said sherpas want the government to set up a welfare fund for guides and their families, using part of the fees paid by clients.
“It´s not about stopping expeditions, but they have demands that need to be fulfilled,” Sherpa, whose national body represents tourism promoters told.
Some of the sherpas and their families are angry about the Nepali government´s offer of 40,000 rupees (about $400) to pay for the funeral expenses of those killed, calling it a disrespectful gesture.

Holy Fire’ ritual in Jerusalem

21042014

Ethiopian Orthodox worshippers hold candles during the Holy Fire ceremony at the Ethiopian section of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem's Old City, April 19, 2014.(Reuters / Nir Elias)

Ethiopian Orthodox worshippers hold candles during the Holy Fire ceremony at the Ethiopian section of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem’s Old City, April 19, 2014. Israeli police reportedly blocked a top UN diplomat, alongside other diplomats and Palestinians, entrance to a pre-Easter Holy Fire ceremony at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, which Israeli authorities called a ‘micro-incident.’
Robert Serry, the UN special envoy for Middle East peace, said he and Palestinian Christians were making their way to attend the ‘Holy Fire’ ceremony at the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, the site where Christians believe Jesus was crucified and buried before rising from the dead.
Inspite of free access order Israeli police refused to let the group of worshipers pass, saying they had orders to that effect.
Serry said he, along with Italian, Norwegian and Dutch diplomats, was forced to wait for up to 30 minutes, crushed by the excited crowd against a barricade, while Israeli officers ignored his request to speak with a superior, according to Reuters.
“A precarious standoff ensued ending in an angry crowd pushing their way through,” Serry said, lashing out at “unacceptable behavior from the Israeli security authorities.”
“It became really dangerous because there was a big crowd and I was pushed against a metal fence the police put up there, the crowd tried to push really hard,” the diplomat said, adding they might have been trampled had police not finally let them pass.
Serry in a statement called on “all parties to respect the right of religious freedom, granting access to holy sites for worshipers of all faiths and refraining from provocations, not least during religious holidays.”
The incident comes as the Holy City, which is of religious importance to Christians, Jews and Muslims alike, prepares Pope Francis’s Holy Land visit next month.
Israel dismissed the UN diplomat’s complaint, calling it an attempt to exaggerate a “micro-incident”while crediting police with maintaining order as crowds of worshipers descended on the city.
Later on Saturday, Israel’s Foreign Affairs Ministry dismissed Serry’s account as “an odd communique on a non-event.”
“Christian dignitaries of the highest level have this evening thanked the Jerusalem Police Department for its efficient service, which has enabled the Holy Day’s celebrations to take place without any hindrance,”the ministry said.
“Had any harm come to the pilgrims due to uncontrolled crowd movements, Mr. Serry would have been prompt to cast responsibility on the same police which he now condemns for doing its job properly,” the Israeli statement added.
Pope Francis is scheduled to visit Jerusalem in May, an event that may be overshadowed by a breakdown in US-brokered peace talks between Israeli and Palestinians, who face an April-29 deadline to resolve their differences. media agencies News

‘Scenarios of Kannada Activism in Bengaluru’

by

Prof. Chandan Gowda,
Azim Premji University,
Bengaluru.

Abstract:
Bengaluru has seen a proliferation of pro-Kannada organizations since the early years of this century. The perceived decline in significance of Kannada and its speakers in the state’s capital appears a paramount concern for them. Many of these groups have found support from major institutional forces, including political parties, the local film industry, and the heads of Hindu religious establishments.  How do they conceive the Kannada cause and the strategies necessary for securing it? What are the continuities and discontinuities between their activist concerns and those of their predecessor outfits?  Mapping the shifting contours of Bengaluru-centred Kannada activism over the last few decades helps grasp the changing political and cultural milieu in the city.

Speaker:
Prof. Chandan Gowda is Professor of Social Science at Azim Premji University, Bengaluru. His research interests include social theory, Indian normative traditions, and Kannada literature and cinema. In addition to his academic publications, he has written extensively for newspapers and published translations of Kannada fiction and non-fiction in English.  He completed his dissertation research at the Department of Sociology, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor in 2007. He is presently completing a book on the cultural politics of development in old Mysore state.

Captain Amrinder Singh Congress candidate from Amritsar had on Saturday said in a TV interview that the riot victims in Delhi had initially not accused Tytler of leading the mobs that went on a rampage in 1984. He had come under attack from the leaders of BJP and SAD, including Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal.
It was followed by the issuance a separate statement by Amarinder, criticising Badal for “misinterpreting” his statement about Tytler. “I have neither given any clean chit to anyone nor do I like to blame someone just because Badal blames him,” he said.
Amarinder, who is contesting against senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley, said in the statement that no court has held Tytler guilty so far. Reports claimed that police had to use water canons to disperse the agitating Akali protesters as they tried to break the barricades placed outside the head quarters.Media agencies
