Congress Kapil Sibal elected to elders
Rajya Sabha elections in seven states on Sunday, especially in Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka and Haryana, Senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal has won. Senior lawyer R K Anand has lost to BJP candidate Zee Founder Chairman.
While 30 of the total 57 seats in the current round of biennial elections have already been decided without a contest, today’s polls will decide the fate of remaining 27 as BJP and Congress will be engaged in a keen battle for some of the states.
Uttar Pradesh, all eight candidates of the Samajwadi Party (SP) were declared elected in the polls for the 13 legislative council seats held yesterday. While expelled SP MLA from Sitapur Rampal Yadav voted against the party whip, sitting SP MLA Guddu Pandit and his brother Mukesh Pandit came to cast their vote with BJP MLA Sangeet Som, leaving little room for speculations over their aligning with the BJP.
AIR correspondent reports that senior SP leader Shivpal Yadav said that action will be initiated against all the party MLAs who voted against the whip. The Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party registered its first major psychological win on Friday when all its three nominees for the legislative council got elected in the keenly contested polls. It was also an easy sail for Congress as its lone candidate won easily. It was very much evident in this election that managers of SP, BSP and Congress could be able to keep their flocks together. Whereas the BJP’s performance could be a cause of concern for the party as one of its two candidates lost the elections.
