#3 – 42nd Sub-Junior National Basketball Championship: Defending champs Kerala girls stunned by Karnataka; MP and Tamil Nadu boys pick up victories
Puducherry, 3rd February 2016: The opening day evening of the Arise Steel 42nd Sub-Junior National Basketball Championship being held at Rajiv Gandhi Indoor Stadium ended with a grand opening ceremony, filled with confetti explosions and balloons, with several high-profile dignitaries in attendance. The Chief Minister of Puducherry, N. Rangaswamy, headlined the opening ceremony with his presence and by declaring the event open. Other dignitaries from the Puducherry government that were present at the ceremony were T. Thiyagarajan, Electricity Minister, P. Rajavelu, Welfare Minister and local MLAs A. Anbazhagan and Malladi Krishna Rao. The Managing Director of Arise Steel, the main sponsor for the event, Mr. RK Aadhav Arjuna also graced the occasion with his presence. One level 2 boys game also took place after the opening ceremony between Bihar and Telangana, with Bihar edging past Telangana for the 59-57 victory.

On morning of the second day of the championship, defending champions Kerala girls were stunned by the Karnataka girls team who came back from a double-digit deficit to clinch a 4-point victory 40 to 36. Aanaga led the way for Karnataka with 12 points. Last year’s runners-up Chhattisgarh also lost today morning in an extra time thriller against Maharashtra. Shruti Bhosale’s 20 points tipped the match in favour of Maharashtra who won by the slimmest of margins (71-70) against Chhattisgarh. In the other girls’ games, Haryana picked up an easy victory against West Bengal, while Rajasthan pulled off a close victory 53-52 against Punjab. Uttar Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh girls also registered wins on the second day against Delhi and Bihar respectively.

In the boys’ games on Day 2, defending champions Madhya Pradesh won their second game in the tournament, this time against Haryana 53-39. Last year’s runners up Chhattisgarh boys defeated the Uttar Pradesh team in comfortable fashion 47 to 32. The Tamil Nadu boys also picked up their second victory with a 67-62 win against Punjab in a close game, led by S. Sharan, who scored a game-high 22 points. The Odisha and Maharashtra boys were also involved in an extra time nail-biter with Odisha clinching a 4-point victory 60 to 56. Karnataka boys played their first game of the tournament today and defeated the Jammu and Kashmir team 39 to 24. The Telangana boys also emerged victorious in their game against Tripura, handily defeating them 71-20.

About the 42nd Sub-Junior National Basketball Championship
The 42nd Sub-Junior National Basketball Championship is being organised in Puducherry from the 2nd to the 8th of February 2016 at the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex. There are two indoor courts inside the complex, named Rajiv Gandhi Indoor Stadium, along with one outdoor court in the complex dedicated to the tournament. This year’s event is being organised by the Puducherry Basketball Association under the aegis of the Basketball Federation of India. The Sub-Junior Nationals is an annual national tournament for U-14 boys’ and girls’ teams from states across India. This year’s tournament is witnessing the participation of 23 boys’ teams and 21 girls’ teams. Arise Steel is the main sponsor for the tournament.

The 41st Sub-Junior Nationals were conducted in Nashik, Maharashtra, where the Kerala girls and the Madhya Pradesh boys emerged victorious clinching the gold medals. Chhattisgarh girls and boys were the second placed teams. The 2013 version tournament was conducted in Patna, Bihar. The Chhattisgarh teams won both the boys and the girls category last year, while the Madhya Pradesh boys and the Tamil Nadu girls finished runners-up respectively.

About Basketball Federation of India
The Basketball Federation of India or BFI is the governing and controlling body of basketball in India, and is responsible for the development and promotion of the sport at all levels. BFI has been involved in conducting camps, clinics, events, and training sessions at its academies for the development of basketball.
