Pakistan, China, US Join Afghan Peace Talks In Kabul
Afghanistan, Pakistan, China and the United States started a second round of talks on Monday aimed at laying the ground for a negotiated end to almost 15 years of war between US-supported government forces and Taliban insurgents in Afghanistan.
Representatives from the four countries met in Kabul to revive a peace process that collapsed last summer.
Any further delay by the Taliban “to come to the table for talks now will further isolate them in the eyes of the Afghan people”, Afghan Foreign Minister Salahuddin Rabbani said in his opening remarks.
Pakistan’s Foreign Secretary Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry is in Kabul to attend the quadrilateral meeting. This is the second round of the four-nation dialogue. A previous round of talks took place in Islamabad a week ago.
The ultimate goal of the diplomatic manoeuvring is to get representatives of the Afghan government and the Taliban into direct negotiations on the country´s future.
The Taliban, which now controls or contests more territory than at any time since it was ousted by a US-led intervention in 2001, will not attend the talks.
Taliban forces have stepped up their campaign in the last year to topple the Kabul government, which has struggled since most foreign troops left at the end of 2014. High-profile suicide attacks and Taliban territorial gains in Helmand province have underlined how far Afghanistan remains from peace.
Afghanistan’s chief negotiator said last week that the talks on Monday would focus on creating a peace plan to persuade the Taliban to give up violence.
Although the Afghan army and the Taliban are intensifying fighting on the battlefield, a political settlement is seen as the most likely solution to the conflict.
Afghanistan’s delayed parliamentary elections to be held in October
Afghanistan will hold postponed parliamentary elections in October, the chief election official said on Monday. Parliament’s five-year term expired last June, but elections were postponed because of security fears. There were also disagreements on how to ensure a fair vote after a disputed presidential election in 2014. President Ashraf Ghani issued a decree last year extending parliament’s mandate until a vote could be held, with critics questioning whether the extension was legal. The elections will now be held on October 15, Reuters quoted Ahmad Yousuf Nuristani, the head of the election commission, as saying.

4th Coal India Hockey India League receives a full house opening
Bhubaneswar, January 18, 2016: The Kalinga Hockey Stadium today went abuzz with high intensity performances on some foot-tapping numbers as the city got ready to host the opening match of the 4th edition of the Coal India Hockey India League 2016. The glittering opening ceremony was graced by the Honorable Chief Minister of Odisha Shri Naveen Patnaik as the chief guest, while local celebrities performed to enthrall the audience before the much awaited opening match between home team Kalinga Lancers and Uttar Pradesh Wizards went underway. The other dignitaries present were Shri Debi Prasad Mishra, Industry Minister, Odisha, Mr Sithirta Bhattacharya, Chairman Coal India Ltd and Dr. Narinder Dhruv Batra, Chairman, Coal India Hockey League unveiled the HIL 2016 trophy.
The opening ceremony kick started with a spectacular performance by Be-Bop aerobatic dancers followed by dance performance of popular Bollywood numbers from Archita and Sabyasachi Mishra. The six team annual club based hockey league, the flagship event of Hockey India – the apex body governing the sport in the country and sanctioned by the International Hockey Federation (FIH) is scheduled to be played across six venues in India from 18th January – 21st February 2016. The six Franchises battling for supremacy in the richest field hockey league in the world are Jaypee Punjab Warriors, Delhi Waveriders, Kalinga Lancers, Uttar Pradesh Wizards, Dabang Mumbai and defending champions Ranchi Rays.

Born in Bangalore (India) in 1973, having lived in France for a decade or so, settling around the area of Menetou-Salon, in a house planted in the middle of a vineyard, Mario d’Souza was able to undertake within himself and for himself the necessary cross-fertilization and fusion of cultures and experiences with no obvious affinities in order to produce, over the past two or three years, a truly personal body of work in which thought, sensitivity, intuition, sensuality and even eroticism (admittedly underlying but present everywhere), blend into pleasure into a sort of hymn to life.

Uttar Pradesh Wizards win nail biting opener against Kalinga Lancers
Monday, January 18th, Bhubaneshwar: Hockey lovers in Bhubaneshwar experienced a nail biting finish to the opening match of the 4th Coal India Hockey India League today at the Kalinga Stadium, where Uttar Pradesh Wizards defeated Kalinga Lancers 8-6. Kalinga Lancers, who held their fort well for most of the game, gave way to the visitors conceding a crucial goal in the dying moments of the fourth and final quarter. The opening match also marked the application of the new scoring system to Hockey where every field goal is equal to 2 goals.
The first half opened to a flurry of attacks from both Kalinga Lancers and Uttar Pradesh Wizards. The first team to break the deadlock in the match was Uttar Pradesh Wizards, when Joulie Wouter capitalized on the first opportunity and converted a field goal in the 9thminute to give the visitors the first ever goal in the new look Coal India Hockey India League giving them a 2-0 lead. Kenneth Bain soon followed Joulie in the goal scoring tally with another field goal in the 14th minute taking the UP team to a 4-0 lead in the first quarter. The hosts fought back hard and scored on the counter attack through a much needed field goal from Pradeep Mor, finishing the first quarter trailing by two goals to the visitors at 4-2.
The second quarter saw a charged Kalinga Lancers where the team left no stone unturned to score. Their efforts were duly rewarded when through a field goal from Australian Glenn Turner in the 29th minute levelling the score at 4-4. There after the lancers kept pressing hard in the opponent circle and their efforts saw results when Glenn scored for the second time in the 37th minute to give the home team a much needed lead of 6-4 in the match.
The third quarter was a mix of attacks and defence from both the teams and saw no goals being scored. The fourth and final quarter began with Uttar Pradesh Wizards pressing hard to equalize but the lancers were too strong with their defence. The visitor’s efforts showed results in the 60th minute from a field goal by Edward Ockenden, levelling the score at 6-6. The final blow of the match for the home team came when Uttar Pradesh Wizard’s Akashdeep Singh struck a goal in the added time of the 4th quarter to give the visitors an incredible win in a really high scoring opener of the 4th edition of the Coal India Hockey India League.
The Man of the Match award for INR 50,000 went to Kalinga Lancers Glenn Turner, while The Coal India Goal of the Match Award for INR 50,000 was won by Uttar Pradesh Wizards Joulie Wouter. The Hero Emerging Player of the match award of INR 25000 went to Kalinga Lancers Dipsan Tirkey.
The next match of the 4th Coal India Hockey India League will played between the Jaypee Punjab Warriors and defending champions Ranchi Rays in Chandigarh on 19th January, 2016.
