UAE introduces compulsory military service for male citizens

The United Arab Emirates has introduced compulsory military service for all Emirati male citizens. The law signals the UAE’s concern over possible turmoil in the Gulf region. The UAE currently has about 51,000 men serving in its armed forces, including an army of 44,000, a navy of 2,500 and an air force of 4,500, according to data from the London-based International Institute for Strategic Studies.


 

Japan omits 640 kg of plutonium in annual IAEA reports

The Japanese government mistakenly omitted 640 kilograms of plutonium in two annual reports for the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the country’s atomic energy agency said. According to the reports, filed for the years 2012 and 2013, plutonium reserves in the country stood at 1.6 tons, while they were approximately 2.2 tons in 2011. The missing 640 kilograms, however, had actually been kept as Mixed oxide (MOX) fuel in one of the reactors in the southern Japanese town of Genkai. 1,000 migrants rescued by Italy’s coastguard

Italy’s navy rescued more than 1,000 migrants from three separate boats early Saturday, 74 kilometers from the Italian island of Lampedusa. On Friday, a further 2,500 were recovered from 17 boats. The small island is a key staging point for smugglers of migrants from North Africa to Europe, and the activity has increased significantly since the beginning of the year. At least 34,800 people had made the crossing from Africa to Italy by May, and attempts are thought to be increasing with the good weather conditions facilitating safer crossings. Thousands have died trying to make the Mediterranean crossing to Lampedusa in recent years.





 

Flash floods in Afghan province of Baghlan

Flash floods in Afghan province of Baghlan taken toll of at least 73 people and forced thousands to abandon their homes, police say.
The flooding has been deadliest in the Guzargah-e-Nur district of the province 140km (87 miles) north of the provincial capital Puli Khumri. Police say the dead include women and children. About 200 people are missing.
At least  2,000 homes have been destroyed and roads washed away in what a local official said was a “huge disaster”.
