Students swept away in dam release at Manali

9062014

The 25 students from the southern IT-city of Hyderabad had been taking photographs Sunday evening at the banks of the Beas River when they were hit by the rush of water from the Larji hyropower station near the mountain resort town of Manali in Himachal Pradesh.
They had been part of a larger field trip of some 48 students spending 10 days near the mountain resort town of Manali in the state of Himachal Pradesh. Some students at the river banks managed to scramble to safety.
“We saw a wall of water hit those who were on the banks. They fell flat and disappeared under the waves,” one student, identified only as Sumiran, told The Indian Express newspaper.
A Manali police officer, speaking on customary condition of anonymity, said four bodies had been recovered Monday morning after a search resumed with the dawn. But police said the search operation was challenged by a shortage of boats and divers.
“Officials there are fearing the chances of finding survivors were slim,” said Anurag Sharma, police director general in the state of Telangana where Hyderabad is located.
Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh demanded the dam´s engineer be suspended while the incident is investigated.
Telangana´s government on Monday sent police officials and parents of the missing to the search site, 530 kilometers (330 miles) north of New Delhi.
Anxious friends and relatives gathered at Hyderabad´s Vigyan Jyothi Institute of Engineering and Technology waiting for news of the missing.
Bodies of five engineering students from Hyderabad, who were washed away in the turbulent Beas River in Mandi district along with 20 others, were recovered on Monday as Chief minister Virbhadra Singh ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident and suspension of the Resident Engineer of the Larji hydropower project.
Twenty-five students, who were taking photographs on the bank of Beas, were washed away last evening when the discharge of water in the river suddenly increased due to release of water from the reservoir of 126 MW Larji hydropower project.
The rescue teams of SSB, assisted by police, Homeguard and local divers and rafters started search operations in the wee hours from Thalout to Pandoh dam. Five bodies including that of three boys and two girls have been recovered, SSB officials at Control Room at Mandi said.
“The high discharge of water and shortage of boats is causing some problem but we have list of missing persons and hope to recover the bodies. Our jawans are moving in boats and strict vigil is being maintained along the banks of Beas and NDRF teams and divers from BBMB have also reached the spot,” the officials said.
The Home Ministry has sought a report from the state on the incident. Taking serious note of the matter, the Chief minister has ordered a magisterial inquiry by Divisional commissioner, Mandi, to fix responsibility for the tragedy and suggest measure to stop recurrence of such incidents.
The Chief Minister has also ordered suspension of the Resident Engineer and a case has been registered against the staff for negligence and not forewarning the people before releasing water from the dam. The Chief Minister has left for the spot along with Power minister Sujan Singh Pathania to supervise rescue operations.
Union HRD minister Smriti Irani visited the site and Telangana Home Minister is expected to arrive in Kullu .
The discharge of water increased suddenly yesterday and caught everyone unawares as the Project authorities released the water apparently without any warning. Enraged people blocked the national highway after the incident on Sunday.

Nadal beats Djokovic to win record 9th French Open title

Nadal beats Djokovic to win record 9th French Open title
Rafael Nadal clinched his ninth French Open and 14th career Grand Slam title on Sunday with a brutal 3-6, 7-5, 6-2, 6-4 victory over a battling Novak Djokovic.
The world number one also became the first man to win five Roland Garros crowns in succession as the 28-year-old took his record at the tournament to 66 wins against just one defeat.
His tally of 14 majors equals the mark of Pete Sampras and puts him just three behind the all-time record of Roger Federer who is almost five years older.
Defeat was cruel for world number two Djokovic, the 2012 runner-up, who still needs a French Open title to become just the eighth man to complete the career Grand Slam.
The Serb dominated the early stages of Sunday’s final, the pair’s 42nd meeting, seemingly immune to the sweltering 30-degree heat on Philippe Chatrier court.
But Nadal, playing in his 20th Grand Slam final to Djokovic’s 13th, grew stronger as the final wore on as he ended a four-match losing streak against his old rival.
The 3hr 31min duel ended on a sour note when Djokovic double-faulted on match point, shaken by a shout from the crowd.
In a tense opening to their seventh Grand Slam final meeting, the steadier Djokovic, sporting a white cap against the fierce sun, pounced to break for 5-3, after Nadal put too much zip on a forehand.
The Spaniard had two points to break back in the ninth game but two more ballooned forehands kept Djokovic, who had even served and volleyed at 0-30, in the picture.
He took the opening set when Nadal, off balance and stranded behind the baseline, went long with a slapped backhand.
It was only the second time the champion had dropped the opening set of a final in Paris — in 2005 against Mariano Puerta and in 2006 against Roger Federer.
However, he regained the advantage with a break to lead 4-2 in the second set with an inside-out forehand stretching the Serb who could only net a desperate return.
But back came Djokovic for 3-4 after a sloppy Nadal service game punctuated by an untimely second double fault.
The world number two saved a break point to go to 4-4, Nadal then held before Djokovic suffered his first serious lapse which was as sudden as it was surprising.
A wild forehand gifted Nadal two set points and the top seed converted with a merciless, crunching forehand.
Djokovic was rapidly wilting in the Paris heat as a 22-shot rally laid the foundation for a Nadal break for 2-0 in the third set, courtesy of a weary backhand volley into the net.

Militants attacked Karachi airport

TTP claims Karachi airport attack, 20 killed
Twnety three persons, including 10 terrorists, were killed when heavily armed militants attacked the Jinnah International Airport in Pakistan’s commercial hub Karachi even as fresh firing was heard early Monday, hours after security forces declared an end to the assault.
At least 23 persons, including 10 terrorists, were killed when heavily armed militants attacked the Jinnah International Airport in Pakistan’s commercial hub Karachi even as fresh firing was heard early Monday, hours after security forces declared an end to the assault.Around 10 to 12 men armed with explosives and ammunition dressed in airport security personnel uniforms entered the Fokker building at the old airport terminal late last night, police said.
Pakistan’s military on Monday declared an end to an all-night offensive to quell a Taliban siege of Karachi airport that left 20 people including security personnel dead.
10 terrorists were killed in the joint operation by law enforcement agencies.
“The attack is over and we have cleared the area of all militants and we will hand over the airport to the Civil Aviation Authority at 12:00 pm (0700 GMT),” a spokesman for the paramilitary Rangers Sibtain Rizvi, told reporters after nearly 12 hours of fighting.
The attack at Jinnah International Airport in Karachi began just before midnight Sunday and raged until dawn, when the military said that all 10 attackers had been killed after they had stormed two areas equipped with suicide vests, grenades and rocket launchers.
But after authorities initially declared the area cleared, a reporter witnessed fresh gunfire break out inside the airport — where explosions and fires had erupted during the night — prompting security forces to relaunch the operation.
The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) group said the attack was in revenge for its late leader Hakimullah Mehsud, who was killed in a US drone strike in November.
TTP spokesman Shahidullah Shahid also dismissed the Pakistani government´s recent offer of a new round of peace talks as a ruse, and promised more attacks to come.
“Pakistan used peace talks as a tool of war,” he told. “We have yet to take revenge for the deaths of hundreds of innocent tribal women and children in Pakistani air strikes.
“It´s just the beginning, we have taken revenge for one (Mehsud), we have to take revenge for hundreds.” Talks to end the TTP´s bloody seven-year insurgency in Pakistan have been underway since February, with little clear progress made so far.
The gun battle was over inside the old airport near the hangers and workshop as military and other security personnel tried to clear up the runaway and surrounding area from the terrorists.
Plumes of smoke and fire could be seen inside the old airport and a few loud explosions were also heard near the workshop and hanger area. A spokesman of the Inter Services Pubic Relations confirmed that army units had been called from the nearby Malir cantonment base and said so far three terrorists had been killed in the gun battle while one blew himself up.
Security forces had cleared up one side of the old airport after killing the terrorists but there was still resistance and heavy gunfire coming from another direction near a workshop, Sindh police spokesman said.
“They are 11 dead bodies inside right now including one police official and some ASF jawans but three terrorists have been killed while one blew himself up as we corned him,” the spokesman, Imran Shaukat told reporters.
He denied that the terrorists had succeeded in blowing up or damaging the aircraft on the runaway. “No aircraft has been hit or damaged although the terrorists are carrying RPG rockets. The explosion and fire is because some oil tankers caught fire on the runaway,” he said.
A spokesman for the paramilitary rangers also confirmed that four terrorists had been killed and said seven more were suspected to be hiding inside a hanger building. He said all passengers and airport staff had been moved to safe places and the aircrafts secured with security personnel securing them from terrorist attacks.
But a source in the Civil Aviation Authority said that the number of casualties could be high as several civilians had been killed or injured when the terrorists entered the airport terminal building.
All flight operations at Jinnah Terminal have been suspended and all routes to the airport have been sealed.
The attack came days after a peace process between the Tehreek-e-Taliban broke down and a ceasefire announced by the TTP was called off.
Since then than there has also been a major break in the TTP with the powerful Mehsud group announcing their separation from the militant outfit led by Maulana Fazlullah. The Mehsud group commanders had warned of resuming attacks against the government and security personnel and installations.
Immediately after the daring attack all flight operations were suspended from the Jinnah international airport with flights not taking off and those scheduled to land in Karachi were diverted to Nawabshah and Quetta or turned back to their original destinations.
Police sources said that the heavily armed terrorists dressed in ASF uniforms forced their way into the old terminal building from two gates and caught the security personnel on duty unaware.
Security forces including Military troops, ASF and police commandos surrounded a hanger and workshop near the old terminal where the terrorists took control after entering the runaway from the old terminal building.

President addresses Joint Sitting of Parliament; promises policies to push growth, create jobs<br />
Addressing the first joint sitting of Parliament after the recent Lok Sabha elections, President Pranab Mukherjee said the Narendra Modi government will initiate a series of social, healthcare and infrastructure programmes while asserting that there will be ‘zero tolerance’ towards terrorism and extremism, besides violence against women.
He said the government will revive ‘Brand India’, riding on its strengths of five ‘T’s — tradition, talent, tourism, trade and technology — and will pursue foreign policy on the basis of “enlightened nationalism” and mutually beneficial relationships.”The people of India have given a clear mandate. They want to see a vibrant, dynamic and prosperous India. They want to see a resurgent India regaining the admiration and respect of the international community,” Mukherjee said in his 55-minute address.
“Brimming with hope and expectation, they want quick results. With three ‘D’s of democracy, demography and demand on our side, … we must rise to the occasion to fulfill these great expectations. In 60 months from now, we should be able to say with confidence and pride that we have done it,” he said.
Noting that the country is passing through an “extremely difficult phase” on the economic front, the President said that GDP growth has been less than five per cent, tax collection has declined and inflation continues to be at an “unacceptable” level.
“Thus, putting the Indian economy back on track is paramount for my government. We will work together to usher our economy into high growth path, rein in inflation, reignite the investment cycle, accelerate job creation and restore the confidence of the domestic as well as international community in our economy,” he said.
In this context, he said the government will create a policy environment which is “predictable, transparent and fair”.
The government will embark on rationalization and simplification of the tax regime to make it “non-adversarial and conducive to investment, enterprise and growth,” the President said.
Observing that the government will make every effort to introduce GST while addressing the concerns of the states, he said “reforms will be undertaken to enhance the ease of doing business.”
“My government will follow a policy of encouraging investments, including through FDI, which will be allowed in sectors that help create jobs and assets,” Mukherjee said.
Government will also strategically promote labour- intensive manufacturing and expand job opportunities by promoting tourism and agro-based industries, he said, adding that employment exchanges would be transformed into Career Centres connecting youth with job opportunities through the use of technology, counselling and training.
Government will set up world class investment and industrial regions, particularly along the Dedicated Freight Corridors and Industrial Corridors spanning the country while encouraging domestic industry to innovate and collaborate internationally, he said.
“It will strive to move towards a single-window system of clearances both at the Centre and at the states through a hub-and-spoke model,” the President said.
To strengthen India’s global trade share, procedures will be simplified and trade infrastructure strengthened to reduce transaction time and costs. Besides, export potential of small-scale and handicraft sectors will be encouraged, he said.
Terming the “lack of robust infrastructure” as a major impediment, he said government will chalk out an ambitious infrastructure development programme over the next 10 years.
“A fast-track, investment friendly and predictable PPP (public private partnership) mechanism will be put up in place,” Mukherjee said, adding that a Diamond Quadrilateral project of high-speed trains will be launched and a network of freight corridors with specialised ‘agri-rail networks’ for perishable agricultural projects created.

India prime minister releases book on how to return the country to success

9062014

 June 8, 2014 / NEW DELHI
Two weeks after becoming India’s prime minister, Shri Narendra Modi today launched the book Getting India Back on Track: An Action Agenda for Reform at 7 Race Course Road.

Edited by Bibek Debroy, Ashley J. Tellis, and Reece Trevor, Getting India Back on Track (published by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and Random House India) contains analyses and prescriptions from some of India’s most accomplished scholars on how to return the country to a path of high, sustained growth and international success.
Speaking to reporters and a small number of invited guests, the prime minister welcomed what he called “the input of intellectual think tanks” like Carnegie and said that policymaking should incorporate input from think tanks to help generate better policy frameworks.
Arun Jaitley, minister for finance, corporate affairs, and defense, said: “I am going to read every part of this book. It will help us to do our job better. The book is well-timed and the title is apt.”
The book’s foreword is written by Ratan N. Tata, chairman of Tata Trusts, who is a member of Carnegie’s board of trustees. Many of the book’s contributors attended today’s event, including Carnegie Board Member Sunil Mittal, chairman and group CEO of Bharti Enterprises.
“The election of Narendra Modi shows the importance of getting India back to the high growth levels we enjoyed at the beginning of this century,” Mittal said. “This book is a unique collection of ideas for how to do that from some of India’s foremost experts.”
The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace is a 100-year-old, nonpartisan think tank with research centers in Beijing, Beirut, Brussels, Moscow, and Washington. Its mission is to advance the cause of peace through analysis, development of fresh policy ideas, and direct engagement with decisionmakers in government, business, and civil society. It plans to open a New Delhi center in the near future.
“India is a very important power in the world and an increasingly influential player on the global stage,” said Carnegie President Jessica T. Mathews, who attended today’s event. “I am delighted and honored that Prime Minister Modi agreed to launch this book. We are looking forward to opening a Carnegie center in New Delhi soon so that we can contribute our scholars’ ideas and analysis to India’s rich intellectual landscape.”

24 Engineers Students +1 Drown in Beas Big Tragedy Excl
June09, 2014
It is unfortunate no one Blames Final Year Engineering students for
going in the Beas River and Engineers of Larji Hydro Projects are
suspended. Instead of visiting Bhakra Dam or Nathpa Jakhari Dams
Engineers from Hyderabad proffered to go in to Beas River.
All rivers in Himalayas carry a lot of water from around May End till
End of Monsoon. This the best time for Hydro Power generation as snow
melt is Clean Water and generators run at full power.
1. They were travelling 3000 Km already passed through scores of
forests and rivers and it is not advisable to stop and go into Fast
Flowing Rivers and Forests.
2. It is unbelievable none of the Engineering Student – 26 who didn’t
went in to the river was recording the Mishap.
At this time all rivers are getting just enough water to run Hydro
Power Stations at nearly full available power – particularly the run
of the river type Hydro Projects.
This WIPO inventor had found that all Run Of River projects around
project site are operating at full power on 8-06-2014, examples – 540
MW, 300 MW, 231 MW Chamera I, II and III HEPs average generation was
537 MW, 307 MW, 231 MW respectively, Salal HEP 690 MW operated at 663
MW, Dulhasti 390 MW HEP operated at 392 MW, Baglihar HEP 450 MW
operated at 438 MW, 1500 MW Nathpa Jhakri HEP on Sutlej Basin operated
at 1572 MW and 206 MW Rampur HEP operated at 213 MW. Dehar 990 MW HEP
diverting Beas Waters to Satluj Basin also produced 590 MW average
power when one unit of 165 MW was taken out for Annual Maintenance.
3. From the evidence above it clear Hydro Power Generators Operated at
full power in Himachal Pradesh, it is unbelievable Largi Project
consisting of three units was not generating any power and suddenly
Switched to full power.
Going by the Video Coverage of many channels it is clear ‘There Was No
Picnic Spot’ where students went in to Beas River.
Scores of Dams are REAL PICNIC CUM EDUCATION Spots which probably they
didn’t go.
Sorry for this AVOIDABLE TRAGEDY.

Didi’s Singing Lessons to Sanju Baba on Gangs of Hasseepur

9062014

Viewers are in for a rollercaster ride of comedy as the upcoming episode of  Zee TV’s Gangs of Hasseepur features Lata Didi (played by former Sa Re Ga Ma Pa contestant Sugandha) and Sanju Baba (played by Sanket Bhosale) in a hilarious parody wherein the legendary singer attempts to teach everybody’s favorite Munnabhai how to sing.
This comedy of errors will have Sanju baba challenging Lata didi to sing something hep and contemporary and she breaks into a rap version of some of her timeless classics, grooving away like a hip hopper in her typical starched white saree avatar … Sanju baba then makes the strangest request for her to sing a ‘maa bete ka ek romantic item song’ and lata didi actually humors his request. The highlight of the act is the moment where lata didi closes her eyes for riyaaz and sanju baba, taking her instructions for singing  “thoda neeche se” literally, goes flat against the carpet and sings… he even climbs on top the couch when she says “thoda aur upar se”
For all this madness and more, stay tuned to Gangs of Hasseepur every Saturday and Sunday at 8 PM only on Zee TV.

Hindu Rashtra Sena has 4,000 members in Pune district
Pune, June 07, 2014: Hindu Rashtra Sena (HRS) chief Dhananjay Desai has a following of nearly 4,000 youths across Pune district, police sources say.
“Desai has managed to attract these youths, most of whom are aged between 19 and 24, through his provocative speeches,” an officer from the crime branch said. “He is accompanied by these youths wherever he goes. Nowadays, he has started moving around in a convoy of vehicles with his supporters.”
The officer said the number of Desai’s supporters is far bigger than that of any criminal gang in the city. “Most of his supporters are jobless and come from a financially weak background,” he said.
Desai has a support base in different parts of the city, including Kothrud, Warje Malwadi, Hinjewadi, Pimpri, Chinchwad, Yerawada and Hadapsar. Several of his followers are from district areas such as Loni Kalbhor and Urali Kanchan.
Police sources say Desai shifted from Mumbai to the outskirts of Pune a few years ago. “To tend to his supporters, many of whom are from economically weaker backgrounds, Desai brokers settlements in disputes mainly related to land and other properties,” a senior police officer from the Pune crime branch said.
Desai has 22 cases registered against him in Mumbai and Pune. While three of the cases are related to dacoity and possession of arms, nearly all the rest pertain to hate speeches made by him.
The HRS chief is in the custody of the Loni Kalbhor police till Saturday for distributing pamphlets carrying objectionable content. “Once he gets bail, we plan to take preventive action against him. We will also question him in the Hadapsar murder case,” the crime branch officer said.
Meanwhile, senior crime branch officials on Friday were busy collecting information about the HRS and Desai. Officials from various police stations in the city were summoned to the crime branch to provide details about the HRS. “We are collecting evidence so that we can at least begin the proceedings to impose a ban on the HRS,” the officer said.

Former top cops ignored warnings
Pune, June 07, 2014: The Pune police ignored warnings against radical Hindu outfits taking root in the city, said former inspector general of police S M Mushrif on Friday.
Mushrif told TOI that in letters to two successive city police commissioners, Meeran Borwankar and Gulabrao Pol, he had cautioned them about activities of these outfits, which included training camps for their cadre. He had said these outfits would pose a serious problem if they were left unchecked.
“Fundamentalist elements in the city have eventually grown stronger and are powerful enough to brazenly conduct violent activities,” Mushrif said on Friday.
“Some fundamentalist organizations and their heads, who are masterminds in various blast cases, are in Pune. I had reported to the city’s police commissioners that training camps are being conducted in the city to train people to carry out violent activities. This is happening since 2000 and late Hemant Karkare, who was detecting the Malegaon blast case, had corroborated my claims with facts,” he said.
Mushrif said the state government and the police have turned a blind eye to terror activities of right wing groups in Pune. In his letters, he had listed these outfits to the top cops. “They (the state and police) are showing ignorance (about the existence of these elements) or they are incapable of handling these elements,” he said, adding that the city’s social fabric was being destroyed.
When contacted, former city police commissioner Gulabrao Pol said he did not wish to comment on the matter. Meeran Borwankar said, “I don’t recollect any specific element he had pointed at. But whenever there were communal incidents, we had taken strict action. There are various sources of intelligence information and we have taken strict action.”
Mushrif said those who claim Pune is peaceful and there is no place for anti-social activities are actually trying to cover-up right wing activities.
This failure to act against them has only emboldened these groups, said national secretary of Rashtra Seva Dal, Ashwini Satav-Doke. She said, “These acts of violence were pre-planned. Without planning it is not possible to conduct attacks on specific spots and community members. Police have failed to nab Narendra Dabholkar’s killers and now Mohsin’s killing shows failure of the state to control anti-social elements.”
Writer scholar Anvar Rajan said, “With recent political developments these groups in Pune and Maharashtra are feeling empowered and feel that they will be protected.”
S M alias Raja Dixit who heads Interdisciplinary School (Humanities and Social Sciences) in University of Pune said, “We are becoming insensitive to the extent that killing of an innocent youth does not create any rage. We have amalgamation of feudal and fascist elements in our society. These elements have blocked process of democratization. Intolerance in this city and society stands as a major challenge before us,” he said.
