Mayawati demands for splitting Uttar Pradesh in 4 parts

With the UPA giving its nod for the creation of a separate Telangana state, former Uttar Pradesh CM Mayawati renewed her demand for splitting the state into four parts, besides creation of Gorkhaland and Vidarbha.
“BSP has always been in favour of smaller states for which it had sent a proposal duly passed by the state Assembly on November 23, 2011, when it was leading the government, for splitting Uttar Pradesh into four states in order to ensure better governance and administration,” the BSP supremo told reporters in Lucknow on Wednesday.
“It is unfortunate that the central government kept it pending since then, but with Telangana becoming a reality, BSP demands that on the principle of one language-one state, the Centre, besides reorganising larger states, should also complete the process of division of Uttar Pradesh into four states, besides (formation of) Gorkhakland and Vidarbha,” she said.
There are demands to carve out separate Gorkhaland from West Bengal and Vidarbha out of Maharashtra.
She asked the union ministers from UP, who were favouring division of the state, to exert pressure on the central government for the process instead of making tall claims.
Mayawati said when her party was in power, she had created new divisions, zones, districts and tehsils so that better administration could be provided to the people of the state, which is the most populous state in the country.
She said she had proposed splitting Uttar Pradesh into Purvanchal, Bundelkhand, Awadh Pradesh and Pashchimanchal.

India-born Mamnoon Hussain elected as Pakistan’s 12th Prez

India-born Mamnoon Hussain, a close aide of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, on Tuesday was elected as the 12th President of Pakistan and will replace incumbent Asif Ali Zardari in September.

Hussain emerged as a clear winner in the one-sided contest with ex-judge Wajihuddin Ahmad of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf party, state media reported.
Pakistan People’s Party withdrew its candidate Raza Rabbani and boycotted the election in protest to the date of polls being changed.
The polling started at 10.00 AM amidst tight security arrangements.
Born in the historic city of Agra, Hussain, who belongs to an Urdu-speaking ethnic group that migrated from India during partition in 1947, was the candidate of ruling PML-N government.
Over 1,000 members of the national parliament and four provincial assemblies cast their ballots to elect largely ceremonial head of the state.
The office of the president is ceremonial in Pakistan but he is still the constitutional chief of the armed forces but cannot order deployments.
He also appoints the services chiefs at the recommendation of the prime minister. Pakistan so far had 11 presidents, out of which five were military generals.
Four of them seized powers through coups, whereas first president Major Sikandar Mirza was elected in 1956 after the first constitution was adopted.

Explosions rock city in Nigeria’s

At least 15 people were killed in a series of explosions in a Christian area of the Nigerian city of Kano on Monday night. “In all bomb attacks 15 were killed,” a policeman in Kano told Reuters, asking not to be named. Meanwhile, a mortuary attendant at a local hospital had told AP that at least ten bodies were recovered from the scene following the attack – one of which appeared to have been planted in a parked Mercedes-Benz. “There is confusion all over the place. There were four huge explosions, so huge that they shook the whole area. Everywhere is enveloped in smoke and dust,” fruit vendor Chinyere Madu told AFP. The blasts took place in the Sabon Gari neighborhood and reportedly targeted Enugu Street – a strip filled with outdoor bars and eateries. Resident Kola Oyebanji told AFP that she believed the explosions focused on the “beer parlors,” although authorities did not comment. At least 22 people died when the same area was attacked by Boko Haram Islamists last March. Kano is the largest city in Nigeria’s mostly Muslim north, where Boko Haram has been fighting to create an Islamic state.

US condemns rising death toll in Egypt protests

The White House has condemned violence in Egypt which left at least 80 Muslim Brotherhood supporters dead over the weekend, although it noted that it has not taken steps to suspend US military assistance to the country. “The United States strongly condemns the violence and bloodshed in Cairo and Alexandria over the weekend that claimed the lives of scores of Egyptian demonstrators,” White House spokesman Josh Earnest told reporters at a Monday briefing. Security forces fired on protesters Saturday morning, following a day of rival mass rallies in Cairo, Reuters reported. Journalists pressed Earnest on whether the rising casualties in the clashes following Morsi’s removal from office would prompt the United States to pull back any portion of its annual $1.55 billion aid to Egypt. In response, Earnest said the White House had no “change in our posture to report.” Current US law requires eliminating aid in the event of a military coup, though officials said last week it is not in the national interest to make such a determination, while publicly avoiding the use of the word “coup” to characterize the removal of the Islamist president by the Egyptian military.

Militants breach Pakistani jail free Taliban members

Gunmen disguised in police uniforms attacked the Central Jail in the Pakistani city of Dera Ismail Khan late Monday evening, in an apparent attempt to free some of the 250 militants currently housed in the facility – members of various terrorist groups including the Taliban and banned sectarian groups. Pakistani security forces struggled against the armed assailants for control of the prison, which was rocked by a series of heavy explosions followed by rocket-propelled grenades and machine-gun fire, district police chief Sohail Khalid told Reuters. An intelligence official told Pakistan’s Dawn newspaper that the attacking militants were heard shouting, ”God is great” and ”Long live the Taliban.” A Reuters correspondent in Pakistan said that militants breached the outer wall of the jail, and the city remained under lockdown. Dozens of prisoners are said to have escaped so far.

Gunfight between street vendors and shopkeepers in Cairo

Fifteen people have been killed in a gunfight between street vendors and shop owners in the central Cairo district of El-Moski, state news agency MENA reported. One of the shops was set on fire. Firefighters contained the blaze before it spread to any nearby buildings, but many of the victims died inside the shop, AFP reported. The gunfight was allegedly caused by a dispute between street vendors and shop owners over trading spaces.

Tunisian PM refuses to step down, sets general election date for December

Tunisia’s Islamist government will not resign in the midst of the political crisis that has broken out following the murder of a secular politician, Prime Minister Ali Larayedh said in a press conference on Monday. “We are not clinging to power, but we have a duty and a responsibility that we will exercise to the end,” declared Larayedh, leader of the Ennahda Party. Larayedh has also announced that the new president will be chosen in a public vote on December 17. Leftist deputy Mohamed Brahmi was gunned down last week in similar circumstances to opposition leader Chokri Belaid in February. Belaid’s death led to a change of government.

Eight injured in Philadelphia housing explosion

Eight people were injured when a row house collapsed in Philadelphia on Monday. Locals reported the incident as a gas-related explosion. A baby and a contractor were both among the victims. The accident happened at approximately 11am local time (1500 GMT) at an unoccupied home which was undergoing structural renovations. The contractor had been employed to undertake the task. Gas and electric crews rushed to the scene to determine the cause of the accident, as gas services were switched off. The area was evacuated, with residents taking temporary shelter in a nearby school.

Seven inbound flights canceled as Egypt clashes intensify

Cairo airport officials have reported the cancelations of seven flights to Egypt as a result of low occupancy. Several flights have arrived in the country less than half full, after clashes over the weekend left 84 people dead. Passengers from Italy and a range of Middle Eastern countries – including Saudi Arabia, Syria, and Yemen – have been rerouted on account of low passenger numbers. The officials confirmed to AP that around 55 per cent of airline seats to Cairo have been left empty over the past three days. There has been a decline in passengers arriving from both Damascus and Beirut, as Syrians fleeing their war-torn home country now need visas to visit Egypt. Tourism in Egypt has suffered over the past two and a half years as tensions have escalated. Media agencies

Bus crash in southern Italy

Italian tour crushed through a sidewall of a highway bridge in southern Italy, and plunged some 30 meters (100 feet) into a wooded ravine, killing at least 38 people, authorities said on Monday.

Rescuers wielding electric saws cut through the twisted wreckage of the bus overnight, looking for survivors after it had plunged to the ground on Sunday night.

At least 10-meters of the wall was torn away, large chunks were visible in a clearing below.

The bus lost control near the town of Monteforte Irpino in Irpinia, a largely agricultural area about 40 miles (60 kilometres) inland from Naples and about 250 kilometres (160 miles) south of Rome, hitting several cars before plunging off the viaduct.

Traffic on the stretch was slowed due to road work, officials said.

State radio quoted a local police chief as saying the bus driver was among the dead.

It was not immediately clear why the bus driver lost control of the vehicle, but prosecutors were investigating technical problems and had ordered an autopsy on the driver.

A reporter for Naples daily Il Mattino, Giuseppe Crimaldi, told Sky TG24 TV from the scene that some witnesses told him the bus had been going at a “normal” speed on the downhill stretch of the highway when it suddenly veered and started hitting cars.

Some witnesses thought they heard a noise as if the bus had blown a tire. The bus was carrying a group of weekend holidaymakers from the Naples.

The group had arrived from small towns near Naples at a hotel at a the thermal spa on Friday afternoon, and had spent the weekend visiting the spa and an early home of Padre Pio, a late mystic monk popular among Catholics, Michele Montagna, the manager of the hotel told Sky TG24.

Polls open in Mali presidential election

28072013
Malians have started casting votes for a new president, as polls have opened across the country. Twenty-seven candidates have wrapped up their campaigns amid a turbulent 18 months since the overthrow of the last democratically-elected government and Mali being plunged into a bloody battle with extremist insurgents. Security has been ramped up, as the population is weary in its recovery from a rebellion in the north which resulted in a protracted military intervention by France.
Many areas remain at high risk. If this round of voting doesn’t yield a winner, a second round is scheduled for August 11. A few observers have doubts as to Mali’s readiness for the election and transition to recovery. Hundreds of thousands have lost their homes amid the violence – the majority will not be able to vote. Islamist militants in the north also put the election at risk by warning fellow Muslims not to participate and promising to burn polling stations. Fairness is another concern in areas still occupied by Tuareg rebels, like the town of Kidal. French troops remain in the country with Chadian forces as part of a UN mission intended to stabilize the situation.Media agencies

India beat Zimbabwe win series

28072013
Virat Kohli the Skipper scored an unbeaten 88, and Amit with man of the match took four wickets to put the host wind up in 46 overs. Hamilton Masakadza (38) and skipper Brendan Taylor (23) added 65 runs for the third wicket to stabilize the innings. Sean Williams top-scored for Zimbabwe with 45 off 53 balls. India chasing 183 runs finished their goal in 35.3 th over.India dismissed Zimbabwe for a mere 183 in just 46 overs
India beat Zimbabwe by seven wickets to win series too in  3-0 lead in the five match ODI series at Harare Sports Club ground on Sunday.Remaining two -one dayers at Bulawayo next week are of academic interest, giving the team India an opportunity to try out their reserve players.
Host Zimbabwe is weak team on papers but their performance showed inherent talent, Team India with young blood showed impressive cricket but to label them as world class is not forgone conclusion as their batting mettle has lots of weakness and is concern for the batsmen to hold their nerve, confident shots control on their line up was missing. However the team India as collective efforts made headway in fielding and bowling which is treat to watch but the batting strength needs to reinvent for further improvement.

TRADERS WELCOME SUSPENSION OF FORM T-2 BY DELHI GOVERNMENT IN DELHI

28072013
TRADERS WELCOME SUSPENSION OF FORM T-2 BY DELHI GOVERNMENT IN DELHI

GOVT SILENCE ON CBI RAID ON VAT DEPARTMENT SUSPICIOUS

CAIT DEMANDED STATEMENT FROM CHIEF MINISTER
the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) has complimented DElhi Chief Minister Smt. Shiela Dikshit for her order made yesterday suspending operations of Form T-2 in Delhi which was imposed by Delhi VAT Department on traders. It will give immense relief to traders of Delhi who were facing great trouble in importing goods from other states but the CAIT has also said that suspension is an interim relief, the Government should withdraw the said Form and it should also concentrate to resolve other key issues concerning VAT which are harrasing traders. It is noteworthy to mention that on the requisition of CAIT, the Delhi CM had convened a meeting of Senior Officials of the Government on 10th June at Delhi Secretariat where she advised the officials to ensure smooth passage of business in Delhi. The CAIT has also demanded Delhi CM to make a statement on CBI raids on VAT Department of Delhi held a couple of days back
It is pertinent to note that on pretext of keeping check on illegal entry of goods in Delhi former VAT Commissioner Mr. Rajendra Kumar imposed Form T-2 on Delhi traders last year under which every dealer was responsible to file online information about likely entry of goods in Delhi and it was also obligatory for the vehicle carrying goods in Delhi to posses a photocopy of the online form -2 submitted  by the dealer and only then any goods can enter into Delhi. The traders while calling it as quite not practicable resorted to strong protest as a result of which the present VAT Commissioner Mr. Prashant Goyal levied the said Form on traders having an annual turnover of more than 10 crores. The traders were having a view that across the Country generally the trucks are loaded with goods only after 9pm and it is almost not possible for Delhi dealer to obtain all transit details from respective transporters and submit the same online. For such an exercise the traders were required to sit even at late night hours. Therefore, implementation of Form T-2 was not practical.
On the other hand the CAIT expressed utmost surprise on maintaining silence by the Chief Minister who is also Finance Minister of Delhi on issue of CBI raid on Delhi VAT Department couple of days back. The CAIT said that although two days have passed but so far the Delhi Government has not issued any official statement about the nature of raid, the persons caught and the amount seized from them. CBI raid on a Government Department is a sensitive issue and no statement from the Government leads to many suspicions.
To raise its strong voice against other VAT problems and problems being created by all three Municipal Corporations of Delhi for traders, the CAIT is holding 50 Protest March in different markets of Delhi on forthcoming 30 July,2013.It has alleged that Authorities are not listening to the woes and sufferings of the traders. Either they should take immediate cognisance of the seriousness of the issue else the traders will be compelled to intensify their agitation in Delhi and if need be the issues would be clubbed with forthcoming Assembly elections in Delhi.
