106th edition of Indian Science Congress to be held in Bhopal

The 106th edition of the Indian Science Congress will be held next year from 3rd to 7th January at the Barkatullah University in Bhopal. General President-elect of the Science Congress Association, Prof. Manoj Kumar Chakrabarti announced that the theme of the meet will be ‘Future India: Science & Technology’.
As part of the valedictory function of the 105th Congress held at the Manipur University in Imphal yesterday, awards especially for encouragement of young scientist ‘Young Scientist Awards 2017-18’ to 14 awardees, ‘Best Poster Award’ to 20 awardees, ‘Best Science Model’ to five awardees and ‘Pride of Indian Exhibition Awards’ were distributed to the awardees from across the country.
Speaking on the occasion, Manipur Governor Dr Najma Heptulla said it is the responsibility of the scientific community to develop young minds to further research in the country. Strongly emphasising that the Science Congress should not be a one-time affair, the Governor urged the scientists to return to the state to conduct research in the field of science.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressing the inaugural session on 16th of March, exhorted scientists to extend their research from “labs to the land” for the greater benefit of the people.

UGC gives autonomy to 60 institutions

University Grant Commission, UGC in a historic decision has accorded autonomy to 60 higher education institutions, which have maintained high academic standards.
Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar made this announcement in New Delhi yesterday. He said, of 60 institutions, five are Central Universities, 21 State Universities, 24 deemed, two Private Universities and eight colleges, which have been granted autonomy under the Autonomous Colleges Regulation.
Mr Javadekar explained that these universities will remain within the ambit of the UGC but will have the freedom to start new courses, off-campus centers, skill development courses, research parks and any other new academic programs. They will also have the freedom to hire foreign faculty, enrol foreign students, give incentive based emoluments to the faculty, enter into academic collaborations and run open distance learning programmes.
The Minister said autonomy was given to these institutions, in line with the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi towards liberalised regulatory regime.
These Central Universities are Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) Delhi, Universty of Hyderabad, Banaras Hindu University, Aligarh Muslim University and the English and Foreign Languages University in Telangana.
These State Universities include Jadavpur University, Kolkata, NALSAR University of Law, Telangana, National Law University, Delhi and Utkal University Bhubaneswar.

Minister Ravi: Congress party hire Cambridge Analytica for 2019 campaign

 Congress has denied the charged, saying it is ‘absolutely false’.
“News about Congress engaged/engaging with Cambridge Analytica is absolutely false.,” Head of Congress’s social media Divya Spandana tweeted.
Union Minister and BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad today said, the Congress party has links with Cambridge Analytica which has been accused of manipulating US elections.
Briefing media in New Delhi this afternoon, Mr Prasad said, Cambridge Analytica, the agency roped in by Congress to run their 2019 campaign and termed as their ‘Brahmastra’ in certain section of media, is accused of using bribes, sex workers to entrap politicians and stealing data from Facebook. Mr Prasad asked Congress President Rahul Gandhi to explain the role of Cambridge Analytica in his social media profile.
The Minister made it clear that any covert or overt attempt to misuse social media including Facebook to influence country’s electoral process through undesirable means will neither be tolerated nor be permitted. He said, the NDA government is committed to free and fair elections.

President Htin Kyaw resigns

President Htin Kyaw, close ally of de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi, resigns says his office, announced on Wednesday, just shy of two years in office. The short announcement made on Wednesday morning ,cites need for rest as he suffered illness and next President shall be selected within seven days.

Myanmar’s president, a close friend of leader Aung San Suu Kyi, said on Wednesday that he would retire. The move puts a representative of the country’s already powerful military at least temporarily in a position of executive power, AP said.
President Htin Kyaw wishes to take a rest, according to the announcement on the Facebook page of the 71-year old. His post will be filled within seven working days, in line with the constitution, the  statement said. Htin Kyaw became president in March 2016, becoming Myanmar’s first elected civilian head of state and head of the first government to be elected in free and fair polls since a 1962 military coup.
