China will remain world’s largest bottled water market to 2021

The ever increasing thirst for quality water and health-conscious drinking habits will mean that China retains its position as the world’s biggest bottled water market to 2021, according to GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.
Growth in disposable income is also expected to help the country’s bottled water market stay ahead of major nations like the US, India, Indonesia and Germany, in terms of volume.
During 2016-2021, GlobalData expects China’s bottled water market to expand at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 7.42% and lead the global market with 57,903.90 million litres expected to be consumed in 2021 alone.
Per capita consumption of bottled water has been on a steady upswing, from 23.6 litres in 2013 to 29 litres in 2016, and is expected to further rise to 30.8 litres in 2017. This consumption pattern is propelled by the improving quality and fast pace of life, which can be seen to steer consumers towards the use of bottled water over barrels of water. This trend is more evident in urban areas where 57.4% of the population resides. Moreover, the quality of tap water in much of China is not high enough to drink.
Ellen Rivers, Consumer Analyst at GlobalData, says: “Growing purchasing power has seen consumers spending more on high-end products. Factors such as exposure to brands and large-scale marketing have served to tip the scales in favour of premium bottled water.”
This segment has witnessed a huge surge in the last few years – jumping from a meagre 45.7 million litres in 2013 to a whopping 520.6 million litres in 2015.
GlobalData has also found that 74% of Chinese consumers pay more attention to packaging materials and capacity when choosing food and beverages, noticeably higher than the global average of 51% of consumers.
Rivers notes: “Packaging is essential to the perception of consumer satisfaction. Trends show that glass packaging, small packages and PET material will have a decisive impact on purchasing choices in China.”

Dear Naresh, where after all do Universal human rights begin?

Dear Naresh,
“Where, after all, do universal human rights begin? In small places, close to home…where every man, woman, and child seeks equal justice, equal opportunity, and equal dignity without discrimination…Without concerted citizen action to uphold them close to home, we shall look in vain for progress in the larger world.”
This was the wisdom of Eleanor Roosevelt, a principle architect of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted sixty-nine years ago today. She understood the power of American leadership—she personified it—and she knew that the most effective way to lead is by example—by living our values.
And yet on this Human Rights Day, we are witnessing a stunning abdication by the United States of its historical leadership role in the world, leaving a vacuum that authoritarians and tyrants are rushing to fill. When President Trump cozies up to dictators, alienates our allies, and denies protection to vulnerable refugees, he undermines the international structures and norms that have helped secure American interests for decades.
You and I have a different vision: We know that respect for human rights is not some fuzzy sentiment; it is the foundation of peace, justice, and security.
That’s why today we celebrate the brave and generous men and women like you—veterans, lawyers, corporate leaders, people of faith, activists—all over our country who are working alongside us to protect human rights and defend American ideals.
Thank you!

Israeli strike on Gaza after rocket attacks

Two militants were killed and at least 25 people have been injured, including six children, after the Israeli Air Force bombed alleged Hamas targets inside Gaza. The airstrikes were in retaliation for 3 rocket attacks launched at Israeli territory.
“In response to the projectiles fired at Israel from Gaza earlier today, IAF aircraft targeted a Hamas training compound & an ammunition warehouse in the Gaza Strip,” the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced on Twitter. “The IDF holds Hamas solely responsible for all hostile acts against Israel emanating from the Gaza Strip.” It went on to say the retaliatory strikes targeted “two weapons manufacturing sites, a weapons warehouse, a military compound”.

No plans for Serbia to join NATO

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic told TASS on Friday that his country is on the European path, but it does not want to join NATO. “Ten days ago, I was in Brussels, at NATO’s headquarters, and told the 29 leaders… that Serbia has no intention of joining NATO,” he said in Belgrade, adding that “Serbia will maintain its military neutrality.” He also said ahead of his visit to Moscow that Belgrade did not impose sanctions on Moscow and will not do that in the future. “No pressure can make us change our position,” he added.

PLAYING WITH MDR RATES IS A FUTILE EXERCISE

TRADE & CONSUMER WANT MDR FREE DIGITAL PAYMENTS
MDR is s complex issue as far as digital payments are concerned in India. Whether a lower or higher MDR ultimately it is an extra financial burden on either the merchant or consumer. Since Cash is available and without any surcharge both merchent and consumer don’t want to pay any charges while exchanging payments and this the transaction charges are major deterrent in adoption and acceptance of digital payments in the Country. If digital payment is encouraged without any MDR then more and more people could be role in to use digital payments.
In this context it will be worthwhile if Govt subsidise MDR directly to the Banks, if they have any shortfall in their revenue protecting both merchant and consumer from burden of MDR.  It is estimated that Govt is spending about 25 000 crore rupees annually on printing of currency and about 6000 crore rupees are spent on security, logistics etc of the currency. If digital payment is intensified with no MDR, the cost of printing currency will come down and on the other hand Banks will also invest less amount in transportation of currency for ATM filling and for other purposes. It will be a win win situation for everyone.
On the other hand the Govt should constitute a separate body for RuPay and NPCI should be made an independent regulator. It is also suggested thatGovt should also constitute a Digital Payments Monitoring Board to monitor digital payment landscape in the Country. Equal opportunity should be given to all technology providers to leverage Digital Payments in India to the best of their ability and resources .
Merely playing with MDR is a futile exercise and we want a MDR free digital payment society else cash is the available resource for meeting the transactions.

10th Asian Airgun Shooting Championships, India won five medals

India won five medals at the 10th Asian Airgun Shooting Championships in Japan today.
On the opening day of the competition at Wako City today, Ravi Kumar won an individual bronze in the men’s 10 metre air rifle while Arjun Babuta won individual silver in the corresponding junior men’s event.
India also bagged three team silver medals in each of the three air rifle events.
However, Olympic bronze-medallist Gagan Narang missed out on an individual podium finish.
Overall, India had seven individual finalists across the three events held today.
This will be the same range where the shooting competitions for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics will be hosted.

Israeli military deploy in West Bank

Israeli military said it was deploying reinforcements to the occupied West Bank after US President Donald Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. The military said that upon the conclusion of the general staff’s situation assessment, it was decided that a number of battalions will reinforce in the area of the West Bank, as well as combat intelligence and territorial defence.
At least 31 Palestinians were wounded in clashes in the Gaza Strip and across the occupied West Bank. Islamist group Hamas has already called for a new intifada, or uprising. In a related development, Jibril Rajoub, a senior member of Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas’s Fatah has said that US Vice President Mike Pence is not welcome in Palestine during his upcoming regional visit. However, Abbas himself has not made any comments over the visit. On the other hand, the White House has warned that cancelling a planned meeting between Abbas and Pence would be counterproductive.
Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin said he is deeply concerned by Donald Trump’s decision, the Kremlin said in a statement. In a telephone conversation with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Putin called for the Palestinians and Israel to “hold back” and renew negotiations.
On the other hand, facing global condemnation on the issue of recognition of Jerusalem as the Israeli capital, the White House has defended the decision of President Donald Trump.White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders told reporters that US is committed to the peace process as ever, and want to continue to push forward in those conversations and those discussions.
When asked whether any other country is planning to follow the US in this regard, Sanders said, she is not aware of any country’s commitment to follow suit on this.
United States today issued a worldwide caution to its citizens travelling overseas. The State Department’s travel advisory includes South Asia in particular Afghanistan and Pakistan in addition to the Muslim-majority countries.

Britain & EU thrash Brexit

Britain and the European Union reached a historic deal today on the terms of the Brexit divorce. European Commission, President Jean-Claude Juncker said sufficient progress had been made by Britain on separation issues including the Irish border, Britain’s divorce bill, and citizens rights.
Jean-Claude Juncker,Theresa May crack an agreement feel wheels on to the Brexit process. Britain and EU effectively place the Irish border issue at ease.
British Prime Minister Theresa may said EU citizens in the UK will be able to go on living as before and there would be no hard border. She said getting to this point had required give and take from both side. May said she expected a formal agreement to be approved at the summit. The agreement paves the way for EU leaders at a summit on 14th and 15th of this month to open the second phase of Brexit negotiations, covering trade talks and a transition period.
The EU had set a deadline of Sunday after the last talks on Monday broke down when May’s Northern Irish allies objected to terms for future arrangements for the Irish border.
Britain voted in June 2016 to become the first state to leave the EU, after more than four decades of membership, but the talks have been slow moving and often acrimonious so far.

Refugees Looking for Help with Their New Lives in Turkey?

Refugees Looking for Help with Their New Lives in Turkey? There’s an App for That

Ankara – Syrian refugees in Turkey are leading the way pioneering web-based services that provide access to information their community needs to help them set up a new life. They have quickly won support from international companies and organizations, and now their apps and online platforms provide displaced communities with housing and job listings, translations of Turkish laws, advice on getting residence permits, opening a bank account, and more.
Roughly 220,000 of the 3,300,000 Syrians in Turkey live in refugee camps and receive housing and basic needs assistance. The rest live in big cities where it can be difficult to find legal employment to build sustainable livelihoods for them and their families. As a result, many turn to the use of technology especially social media and apps that help them navigate the local context. The convenience and accessibility of online work is also a factor attracting Syrians to the tech sector.
Recognizing the growing trend of displaced persons seeking solutions and employment in the tech industry, IOM, the UN Migration Agency, provides Information Technology and Communication (ITC) skills development through its emergency response programme in provinces on the Syrian border including Gaziantep, Sanliurfa, Hatay, and Izmir. To date, IOM’s Entrepreneurship Training and Grants Project has reached 555 displaced persons, enrolling 87 of them in an intensive 90-hour training course and providing select teams with seed funding to create their own startups.
One of these beneficiaries is a young man named Khaled Fattal, a 28-year-old Syrian IT engineer and project coordinator for an organization called Kodra that trains Syrians on how to start their own companies. Khaled participated in an IOM-hosted workshop in Gaziantep on 5-6 December that brought together a diverse group of UN agencies, international organizations, Turkish and Syrian tech companies all working to better integrate displaced persons in the tech sector and create win-win solutions for ITC companies and Syrians looking for jobs.
“Taking part in this workshop made me familiar with companies I did not know about before that provide IT training to Syrian refugees. It’s also provided me with more connections that will help the Syrians Kodra works with to reach more clients,” said Khaled.
Representatives from companies such as Turkcell, Cisco, and NGOs such as Re:Coded and Natakallam, participated in the workshop to discuss how to build stronger working partnerships. Some of discussion focused on how to tackle challenges Syrians face in terms of finding longer-term freelance work, securing jobs in the formal sector, and overcoming barriers such as restrictions on international bank transactions, etc.
Furkan Ozdil, a representative from Turkcell’s Corporate Social Responsibility department, shared another important barrier they are addressing. “Turkcell’s Hello Hope mobile app is helping integrate displaced Syrians through providing Turkish language education, with the aim to help them overcome language barriers and improve their employment prospects,” he said. The app also provides easy access to Turkcell’s Arabic Call Center and provides information on general services available to them.
Michael Newson, IOM’s Senior Labour Mobility and Human Development Specialist who presided over the workshop, said, “It’s crucial we identify the challenges Syrians face in getting jobs and come up with more innovative approaches to help them gain skills and access the labour market. I am happy to see integration between host and refugee communities improving on this topic and our workshop is a good example of this. Half of our participants are from Syrian communities and the other half are Turkish.”
IOM Turkey plans to expand the programme to additional provinces in 2018 and increase the number of entrepreneurship grants for innovative projects.
