#7:  41ST SUB-JUNIOR NATIONAL BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP – CHHATTISGARH GIRLS GET THE BETTER OF KERALA

(Vishnu Ravi Shankar) Nashik, 24-25 November 2014: The qualifying matches of the upper pool teams held on the evening of Day 3 of the 41st Sub-Junior National Basketball Championship produced a few close contests. Defending champs for the girls Chhattisgarh managed to hold off a comeback from the Kerala team and registered a 65-60 win. Local favourites, Maharashtra girls made easy work of the Punjab team with a 42-5 win. The Rajasthan and Haryana boys were involved in a high scoring contest with Rajasthan pulling away for a 94-88 win. Much to the disappointment of the local crowd, the Maharashtra boys ending up the losing side against the Madhya Pradesh team, who picked a 80-53 win.

On the morning of Day 3, the West Bengal and Haryana girls won their qualifying matches against Odisha and Telengana respectively to move to the upper pool. The Assam and Chandigarh boys also moved to the upper pool with wins against Punjab and West Bengal respectively, thus knocking them out of the tournament.

About the 41st Sub-Junior National Basketball Championship

The Sub-Junior National Basketball Championship is an annual national tournament for U-14 boys’ and girls’ teams from states across India. The Nashik District Basketball Association and the Maharashtra State Basketball Association under the aegis of the Basketball Federation of India and IMG-Reliance are conducting the 2014 tournament on the two wooden courts at the Meenatai Thakare Indoor Stadium here in Nashik. The tournament will be conducted over a period of 7 days from the 22nd to the 28th of November 2014. This year’s tournament is witnessing the participation of 27 boys’ teams and 25 girls’ teams from various states of the country. The 2013 version tournament was conducted in Patna, Bihar. The Chhattisgarh teams won both the boys and the girls category last year, while the Madhya Pradesh boys and the Tamil Nadu girls finished runners-up respectively.

About the Basketball Federation of India

The Basketball Federation of India or BFI is the governing and controlling body of basketball in India, and is responsible for the development and promotion of the sport at all levels. BFI has been involved in conducting camps, clinics, events, and training sessions at its academies for the development of basketball. BFI came into being in 1935 and took complete control over Indian basketball in 1950. Prior to that time, the Indian Olympic Association handled the conduct of Indian basketball championships. (Vishnu Ravi Shankar) Nashik, 23-24 November 2014: The Maharashtra boys squared off against Haryana in the last game of yesterday evening. It was a fast-paced encounter with both teams applying similar run-and-gun styles of play. It was neck-and-neck at half, but Maharashtra had a huge third quarter and managed to suppress a comeback from Haryana to come away with a 84-73 victory. Earlier in the evening, the Madhya Pradesh boys’ team dominated against Tamil Nadu with a comfortable 87-65 victory. In the lower pool games yesterday, the Punjab boys remained undefeated picking up a 68-29 victory against Uttarakhand. In the girls matches yesterday, defending champs Chhattisgarh defeated a tough Karnataka team 68-52, while the Kerala girls steamrolled Punjab 79-20.

On the morning of Day 3, the lower pool matchups produced no major surprises, with the Delhi boys beating Jammu and Kashmir 31-4, while Punjab continued their winning streak beating Tripura 56-20. The Telengana girls put up yet another impressive performance with an easy 47-22 victory against Assam.
